I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt's house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.

I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see—the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving and never to come back was hardly in my head then.

The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism(乐观), but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather(继父)and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to "the hard times. "

My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with immigration officers(移民局官员), took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.

From my experiences I have learned one important rule: Almost all common troubles go away at last! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.

  1. (1) How did the author get to know America?
A . From radio programs B . From books and pictures C . From her mother D . From her relatives
  2. (2) For the first two years in New York, the author ________.
A . often lost her way B . did not think about her future C . studied in three different schools D . got on well with her stepfather
  3. (3) What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 4?
A . She worked as a translator. B . She attended a lot of job interviews. C . She paid telephone bills for her family. D . She helped her family with her English.
  4. (4) The author believes that ________.
A . her future will be free from troubles B . it is difficult to learn to become patient C . there are more good things than bad things D . good things will happen if one keeps trying

In today's information age, it's nearly impossible to avoid using social media. According to USA Today, even American universities are increasingly using social media as a learning tool. Their goal is to teach students how to use social media professionally.

Jade Johnson is taking an upper-level advertising course at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. For the class, he has had to organize and promote a contest via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, channels that are commonly used by advertising firms.

"A lot of times students prefer not to use certain social media, but are forced because of the class, " says Jade.

Some students may be unwilling to create an account, but Jade says that it was helpful because social media skills mean better job opportunities in today's world.

More college classes are appearing that are designed specially to teach students about social media, offering them a different look into something they may use on a daily basis.

Jenna Kapsis, a senior at William Paterson University, was required to post two Tweets on Twitter and one update on Facebook per week in her Digital and Social Media Communication class. The course had a specific Facebook page where students would create discussion groups and post links.

"Some of the topics included social media manners, online marketing and current events," Kapsis says.

As technology continues to develop, colleges and universities will likely continue to find ways to combine it into their teaching. Whether it's to create discussion groups, carry out plans, or communicate with students, professors are ensuring that students can see the potential (潜力,潜能) of mastering social media platforms.

  1. (1) According to Jade Johnson, what's the benefit of social media skills?
A . Increasing the possibility of finding good jobs. B . Bettering the communication between teachers and students. C . Improving students' learning efficiency. D . Offering students a different look into things.
  2. (2) Which of the following may NOT be one way to combine social media into teaching?
A . Carrying out plans. B . Doing some experiments. C . Creating discussion groups. D . Communicating with students.
  3. (3) Why do the US university focus on the promotion of social media skills?
A . Because it can strengthen the universities' competitiveness. B . Because it will improve the universities' teaching quality. C . Because it will help professors carry out researches more easily. D . Because it will be of great importance in this high-tech society.
  4. (4) Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A . Most students are unwilling to use social media. B . Social media skills are hard for students to master. C . Social media skills have been used in some courses. D . The learning of social media skills is a heavy burden for students.

Electrical devices(仪器) could soon use power made by human energy. Scientists say they have developed an experimental device that produces electricity from the physical movement of a person walking. British scientist Max Donelan and other scientists in Canada and the United States developed the device.

The device connects to a person's knee. As the person walks, the device captures energy each time the person slows down. To do this, the device helps with the slowing down movement of the leg. The movements of the walking person push parts of a small machine that produces electricity. Using the device, an adult walking quickly could produce thirteen watts of electricity in just a minute. Donelan says walking at that speed could produce enough power to operate a laptop computer for six minutes.

There are several possible uses for the device. Developers say it could help people who work in areas without electricity to operate small computers. The device could also be used in hospitals to operate heart pacemakers(起搏器). It could even be used to assist in the movement of robotic arms and legs.

The experimental version of the device weighs about one and a half kilograms, but it is too costly for most people to buy. But the researchers hope to make a lighter, less costly version. An improved version should be ready in one year.

The developers hope the device will one day help developing countries. Nearly twenty five percent of people around the world live without electric power.

A similar product was invented in 2005 by Larry Rome of the University of Pennsylvania. He created a bag carried on a person's back that also produces power from walking.

The knee device does not produce as much electricity as the bag. But the bag requires the walker to carry a load of twenty to thirty kilograms.

  1. (1) The second paragraph mainly talks about     .
A . who developed the device B . how the device works C . several possible uses for the devices D . how much electricity the device can produce
  2. (2) Compared with the device designed by Larry Rome, this new device     .
A . produces power without adding more loads to the walker B . can produce more power in a much shorter time C . needs to be equipped with a battery D . can help the walker walk faster
  3. (3) From the passage, we can learn that the electrical device can     .
A . help housewives operate the washing machine B . make it much easier for us to go online C . produce more electricity than that invented by Larry Rome D . be applied in medicine to operate heart pacemakers
  4. (4) What would be the best title for the passage?
A . First device powered by walking will soon be on the market B . Advanced technology brings in a new way to operate heart pacemakers C . Device gives new meaning to the idea of power walking D . Human energy will become a main source of electricity

When Li Ming was a primary school student, he had to wearing glasses. Now he is becoming more and more near-sighted. The more he reads, the thick his glasses become. As far as I know it, more and more students have poor eyesight in China.

Why did so many students have to wear glasses? Sometimes they read in strong sunlight and sometimes they read in places which the light is too poor. Some watch TV too many. Some even have a bad habit of reading in bed. As result, their eyesight becomes poorer and poorer.

I think students should know the importance of protecting their eye. They should read in places with enough light. Look out of the window or just go out before reading for a while. In a word, we should relax our eyes as often as possibly.
