There was once a lonely girl who longed so much for love. One day while she was walking in the woods she found two starving songbirds. She took them home and put them in a small cage, caring them with love. Luckily, the birds grew strong little by little. Every morning they greeted her with a wonderful song. The girl felt great love for the birds.

One day the girl left the door to the cage open accidentally. The larger and stronger of the two birds flew from the cage. The girl was so frightened that he would fly away. So as he flew close, she grasped him wildly. Her heart felt glad at her success in capturing him. Suddenly, she felt the bird go weak, so she opened her hand and stared in horror at the dead bird. It was her desperate love that had killed him.

She noticed the other bird moving back and forth on the edge of the cage. She could feel his strong desire—needing to fly into the clear, blue sky. Unwillingly, she lifted him from the cage and threw him softly into the air. The lucky bird circled once, twice, three times.

The girl watched delightedly at the bird. Her heart was no longer concerned with her loss. What she wanted to see was that the bird could fly happily. Suddenly the bird flew closer and landed softly on her shoulder. It sang the sweetest tune that she had ever heard.

Remember, the fastest way to lose love is to hold on it too tight; the best way to keep love is to give it wings!

The bad health effects of sleep loss during the week can't be repaid by longer weekend sleep, according to a new study.

Researchers have long known that sleep deprivation (剥夺) can cause weight gain and increase other health risks. But for those who force themselves out of bed every weekday after too few hours of shut eye, they hope turning off the alarm on Saturday and Sunday will repay the weekly sleep debt and remove any ill effects.

The research, published in Current Biology, crushes those hopes. Despite complete freedom to sleep during a weekend recovery period, people in a sleep lab who were limited to five hours of sleep on weekdays gained nearly three pounds over two weeks and experienced disorders that would increase their risk for diabetes over the long term. While weekend recovery sleep had some benefits after a single week of sleep loss, those gains were wiped out when people fell right back into their same sleep deprived schedule the next Monday.

"If there are benefits of catch-up sleep, they're gone when you go back to your daily schedule. It's very short lived", said Kenneth Wright, director of the sleep and chronobiology lab at the University of Colorado at Boulder. ''These health effects are long term. It's kind of like smoking once was-people would smoke and wouldn't see an immediate effect on their health, but people will say now that smoking is not a healthy lifestyle choice. I think sleep is in the early stage of where smoking used to be. ''

Wright said that the study suggests people should put sleep in the first place cutting out the ''sleep stealers'' such as watching television shows or spending time on their phones. Even when people don't have a choice about losing sleep because of child-care responsibilities or job schedules, they should think about getting sleep in the same way they would get a healthy diet or exercise.

  1. (1) What does the underlined word "rushes" mean?
    A . Arouses. B . Guarantees. C . Deepens. D . Ruins.
  2. (2) According toKenneth Wright , which of the following statements is true?
A . People will see the effects of sleep loss after a long time. B . People will benefit a lot from weekend recovery sleep. C . Smoking and sleep loss have the same bad effects. D . Sleep lossSmoking is less harmful than smoking.
  3. (3) What does Kenneth Wright advise people to do?
A . Do regular exercise every day. B . Reduce the screen time before sleep. C . Watch some TV shows before bedtime. D . Sleep as long as possible during weekdays.
  4. (4) What does the author intend to do by writing the passage?
A . To share some unhappy experiences. B . To show some unknown facts. C . To introduce a new study. D . To promote a healthy lifestyle.

Have you ever shouted at your computer because it wasn't working? Your computer couldn't "yell" back – until now. AI researchers are now working on computers that can argue and perhaps even win debates with humans.

IBM scientists published a paper in Nature on March 17 about their new AI system – Project Debater. After listening to arguments from its opponent (对手), the system can search around 400 million online articles in less than five minutes. It looks for ideas that can support its own argument.

Testing on the system began in 2019 when it debated with Harish Natarajan, a professional debater who holds the world record for most debate competition victories. The debate topic was whether or not preschool should be funded, and the AI system argued in favor of this idea. Although the AI lost the debate in the end based on the audience vote, the audience said it did very well. Interestingly, 58 percent of the audience said that Project Debater increased their knowledge about the topic, while only 20 percent said the same about Natarajan. Also, Project Debater has shown strength at making impressive and logical opening statements in the debate, according to Scientific American.

Humans and technology have been battling for decades. In 1997, IBM's Deep Blue became the first computer to defeat a reigning (卫冕的) chess champion, Garry Kasparov in a six-game match. So after two decades, have IBM's researchers just reproduced a "Deep Blue" to debate? It's much more than that, the researchers noted. Argument and debate are fundamental abilities of human intelligence, and it's a step outside of AI's comfort zone to enter this field, according to the article in Nature.

  1. (1) What is the function of the first paragraph?
A . To give background information. B . To ask a question about computer. C . To make a comparison. D . To introduce the topic.
  2. (2) How can Project Debater debate with humans?
A . By collecting a lot of data in a short time. B . By listening to researchers' instructions. C . By making use of its internal data. D . By learning from humans.
  3. (3) What did the audience think about the performance of Project Debater?
A . Its statements were not logical enough. B . Its opening statements were boring. C . Its overall performance was better than Natarajan's. D . It made them more informed of the topic.
  4. (4) What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A . AI technology hasn't progressed much for decades. B . AI has advanced itself by stepping in debating. C . Project Debater is much better than Deep Blue. D . AI has lost the battle against humans in debating.

You often find somebody who works around you complaining all the time, don't you? About 70% of Americans say being around non-stop complainers sometimes has a bad influence on them. Luckily, here are 4 tips to help form positive patterns.

1. Self-awareness

When a negative thought pops into your mind, immediately correct it. Instead of telling yourself "That's a nice shirt, but I can't afford it," change the message to "That will look great with my black pants when I can afford it. " Of course, everyone complains sometimes. But the less frequently you complain, the better you will feel.

2. Distance yourself

Excuse yourself and go somewhere quiet, somewhere outdoors in the fresh air. Think of something pleasant before returning. You have to take this seriously because negative people can and will pull you into the quicksand (难以摆脱的困境).

3. Don't try to change complainers

If you find yourself trapped in a group of complainers in a meeting or at a social event, simply choose silence. Let their words bounce off you while you think of something else. Attempting to stop the complaining can make you a target. If someone says, "I hate Mondays, weekends are too short," try to think, "I'm glad I rested up over the weekend, so I'm ready to make some improvement on that big project. "

4.

When someone is shouting at you angrily, throw the responsibility back at them by asking, "So what do you intend to do about it?" In most cases, complainers don't really want a solution. They just want to speak them out. If you make them aware that they themselves have to find the solutions, they will leave you alone and find someone else to complain to. If so, you will be happy.

A. Change responsibility

B. Search for solutions

C. By doing this, it will lead to positive behaviors.

D. You have got a lot of company.

E. Whenever possible, escape from negative conversations.

F. You will never know what they are going to talk about.

G. But you can redirect the discussion in your own mind.

I just marked my first Mid-Autumn Festival celebration in China. Exactly a week after arriving for my graduate studies, I was kind of homesick—memories of past 1 back in Serbia(塞尔维亚) with family and friends exchanging scenes in my mind. On the morning of Friday, September 13rd, the2 on the campus was very cheerful. Chinese students explained to us the importance of the day as gifts of mooncakes were 3. Then came the night. The full moon appeared: huge ball high above the campus, and eyes looked at it with 4. Unlike previous nights, a cool breeze swept through the campus. With Serbian music playing on my headphones, I danced my way, 5 in the wind, and forgetting myself for a moment.

As I settled back into my room, I was fascinated by the festival's idea. My 6 mind pushed me online where I came across the poem Prelude (前奏) to Water Melody(水调歌头), by the well-known Chinese writer Su Dongpo. This poem concisely(精确地) seized what I was 7 . Eventually, Su asked his family to join him in 9 the perfection of a full moon in a 10 night. What a way to finish! I, too, was hoping that all was well with my family. Despite the distance and anxiety that comes with not seeing or hearing from a loved one, we were all flourishing (繁盛的) under the watch of the full moon.

And 11 we may go away from home, as happens from time to time; the family remains the most important 12 to our productive existence. As the Chinese used the holiday to 13 with the loved ones, the Serbian community also got together, shared a meal and walked on the streets under the neon (霓虹灯) lights.

As I write this, a day after the Festival, I cannot help but look forward to the next. Thank my Chinese friends, whose14 made me and a crowd of other foreign students experience an 15 Mid-Autumn Festival.
