A hotel that calls itself the world's first "polar bear hotel" has opened in northeastern China. The Polar Bear Hotel is part of the Harbin Polarland amusement park in Harbin, the capital and largest city in Heilongjiang province.

It opened earlier this month and promised that guests would be able to see live polar bears from all 21 guest rooms. "Whether you're eating, playing or sleeping, polar bears will keep you company," Harbin Polarland said in a statement on the WeChat messenger service. Photos and videos from Chinese state media showed people watching two polar bears in a closed, indoor space with artificial ice and small pools of water.

Yang Liu is a spokeswoman for Harbin Polarland. She told Reuters that the indoor area is the only part of the bears' total living space. She said they are also let outdoors when temperature and air quality permits. Liu added there has been "very high" interest in staying at the hotel, where rooms cost from about $290 to $351 a night.

But some animal rights activists have criticized the hotel. Jason Baker is vice president at animal rights group PETA. He told Reuters, "Polar bears belong in the Arctic, not in zoos or glass boxes in aquariums — and certainly not in hotels." He added, "Polar bears are active for up to 18 hours a day in nature, roaming home ranges that can scan thousands of miles, where they enjoy a real life."

In 2016, a shopping center in the southern city of Guangzhou drew worldwide criticism after videos showed a polar bear named Pizza lying on her side in a glass-walled area.

Harbin Polarland was established in 2005. It calls itself the world's first polar performing arts amusement park.

It's no surprise that stress and anxiety are often viewed in a negative light, but Lisa Damour, a private-practice psychologist, suggests they're not always bad for us. She claims that a little bit of both can help build mental resilience and these experiences can sometimes benefit us.

Damour explained how stress often occurs when people operate at the edge of their abilities - when they push themselves or are forced by situations to stretch beyond their familiar limits. This can result from both bad and good events, she said. For instance, being fired is stressful, but so is bringing a baby home for the first time. She described how stress is unavoidable in daily life and that medium levels of stress "can have an inoculatingfunction", which can lead to "higher than average resilience" when we face new difficulties.

"Anxiety gets an unnecessarily bad comment" she said, "Anxiety is an alarm system inside the body, likely handed down by evolution, which informs us of threats from both outside, such as a driver turning aside suddenly, and inside, such as when we've wasted too much time and it's time to get started on a task."

Viewing anxiety as sometimes helpful or even protective allows people to make good use of it, suggests Damour. For example, she often tells the teenagers she works with in her practice to pay attention if they start to feel anxious at a party because their nerves may be warning them of a problem.

Many researchers use the term artificial intelligence (AI) to describe the thinking and intelligent behavior by machines. While AI can be helpful to human beings, scientists warn it can also be a threat.

Stuart Russell, who teaches computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, says humans should make AI products that we like.

"In the future," Russell says, "many of today's jobs that require a lot of physical labor will be replaced by machines with artificial intelligence. These include agricultural jobs, and ones with repetitive duties like telephone call centers. Al machines can also replace jobs like ones in the financial industry-jobs that require studying a lot of data."

The health industry is one area that artificial intelligence is already changing. AI can process huge amounts of data, so doctors can use the most up-to-date information to diagnose and treat patients.

IBM's Watson technology is already in use at hospitals in North and South America, Europe and Asia. Watson helps doctors keep up with information.

There is also a dangerous side of artificial intelligence. One example is combining drone technology and AI to create autonomous weapons.

Stuart Russell is working to create international treaties to ban such weapons. He says the risk is that people will use the technology to develop a kind of "poor men's nuclear weapon".

IBM's Banavar points out the value of artificial intelligence, including search engines and the autopilot function on planes.

The debate about whether artificial intelligence is good or bad for humans continues. Researchers agree there is no question that the technology is here, and that will continue to change the life on our planet.

Rare Piece of Chinese Art Found at US Home Sale

A small bowl (buy) for $35 at a home in Connecticut turned out to be a rare piece of ancient Chinese art. The bowl is worth between $300,000 and $500,000. It (go) up for sale at an auction to be held by Sotheby's (苏士比拍卖行).

Sotheby's says the object was found at a yard sale in the New Haven area last year. A collector of (antique) saw the bowl at the sale, paid $35 for the bowl and later emailed information and photos to Sotheby's asking for estimate of its value.

Two experts from Sotheby's confirmed the bowl was from the 1400s when they were able to look at it person. McAteer said all the information helped them identify it as a product of the early Ming period. But now only six other such bowls are known to exist, most of are in museums. the bowl ended up at a Connecticut yard sale remains a mystery. It is possible that the bowl (pass) down through generations of the same family who did not know how special it was.

McAteer said. "It's always really (excite) for us as specialists when something that we didn't even know but existed is (seeming) out of nowhere.
