Ever since I graduated from high school I've worked in the factories surrounding my hometown every summer. However, making the transformation between school and full-time blue-collar work during the break never gets any easier. For a student like me who considers any class before noon to be unacceptable, getting to a factory by 6 o'clock each morning is suffering. My friends never seem to understand why I'm so relieved to be back at school or that my summer vacation has been anything but a vacation.

There are few people as self-confident as a college student who has never been out in the real world. People of my age always seem to overestimate the value of their time and knowledge. In fact, all the classes did not prepare me for my battles with the machine I ran in the plant, which would jam whenever I absent-mindedly put in a part backward or upside down.

The most stressful thing about blue-collar life is knowing your job could disappear over night. Issues like being laid off and overseas relocation had always seemed distant to me until my co-workers told me that the unit I was working in would shut down within six months and move to Mexico, where people would work for 60 cents an hour.

After working 12-hour shifts (轮班) in a factory, the other optionshave become only too clear." This job pays well, but it's hell on the body, " said one co-worker. " Study hard and keep reading." she added. When I'm back at the university, skipping classes and turning in lazy re-writes seems too irresponsible after seeing what I would be doing without school. All the advice and public-service announcements about the value of an education that used to sound stale (陈腐的) now ring true.

My experiences in the factories have inspired me to make the most of my college years before I enter the real world for good.

Jeremy from America cannot understand why a lady he met outside the Hyde Park in London said, "Ooh, isn't it cold?", and he thinks of this behaviour as a distinctively English concern about the weather. In fact, the female was just trying to strike up a conversation with Jeremy. Not necessarily a long conversation — just an exchange of greetings. It is not always quite that obvious, but all English weather conversations have a distinctive structure conducted according to unwritten but accepted rules.

The unpredictable nature of our weather ensures that there is always something new to comment on, or perhaps most importantly, agree about. We have already established that weather-speak greetings like "Cold, isn't it?" require the response expressing agreement, as in "Yes, isn't it?" .It would be very rude to respond with "No, actually it's quite mild." or "It's pretty hot to me." If you deliberately break the rule, you will find that the atmosphere becomes rather tense and awkward. There may be an uncomfortable silence. Most likely, they will either change the subject or continue talking about the weather among themselves politely, if coldly, ignoring your faux pas.

There is, however, one situation in which English weather-speakers are not required to observe the agreement rule at all and that is the male-bonding argument, particularly the pub-argument. In the special environment of the pub, constant disagreement not just on the weather, but on everything else as well is a means of expressing friendship.

While we may spend much of our time complaining about our weather, foreigners are not allowed to criticize it. Indeed, this brings us to the weather as family rule. In this respect, we treat the English weather like a member of our family: one can complain about the behavior of one's own children or parents, but any blame from an outsider is unacceptable. The weather may be one of the few things about which the English are still unconsciously and unashamedly patriotic (爱国的).

In Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, you can find Jamey Turner playing an unusual musical instrument, the glass harp (竖琴). A glass harp is made up of different sized drinking glasses, each filled with water.

Turner makes music by running his fingers over the tops of the glasses. By doing so, each glass makes a different musical sound. Visitors to Alexandria like what they see and hear. They thank Turner by leaving a dollar or more in his box for donations. Jamey Turner is 78 years old. Turner became interested in playing the glass harp at the age of six, when he heard his father playing with a glass of water at the dinner table. He has been playing it for 50 years.

Today Turner puts together his instrument by placing 60 different glasses on a wooden soundboard. He holds the glasses in place with rubber bands, which keeps them from breaking. He then adds different amounts of water to each one to create different musical notes. Adding or taking away just a little water will change the sound. Adding water to a glass will make a lower sound. The smaller bowls of water produce a higher sound, while the larger ones produce a lower, deeper sound.

Turner always uses low-priced glass because it sounds better than costly crystal(水晶) and he has more control over the sound. Before buying new glasses, he will test them in stores. He decides if they produce the right sound by rubbing his finger over the top of them.

The glass harp was popular 300 years ago when composers like Wolfgang Mozart wrote music for the instrument. There have been about 400 pieces of music written just for the glass harp. But Turner plays all kinds of music, even popular music from China. Few people play the glass harp these days, but Turner says he sees videos of people experimenting with the instrument on YouTube. He hopes the next generation will continue making its music.

A Few Tips for Self-Acceptance

We all want it… to accept and love ourselves. But at times it seems too difficult and too far out of reach.  Here's a handful of ways that will set you in the right direction.

● Do not follow the people who make you feel not-good-enough. Why do you follow them? Are you hoping that eventually you will feel empowered because your life is better than theirs? Know that your life is your own; you are the only you in this world.

●Forgive yourself for mistakes that you have made. We are often ashamed of our shortcomings, our mistakes and our failures.  You will make mistakes, time and time again. Rather than getting caught up in how you could have done better, why not offer yourself a compassionate (有同情心) response? ＂That didn't go as planned. But, I tried my best.＂

●Recognize all of your strengths. Write them down in a journal. Begin to train your brain to look at strength before weakness. List all of your accomplishments and achievements. You have a job, earned your degree, and you got out of bed today.

●Now that you've listed your strengths, list your imperfections. Turn the page in your journal. Put into words why you feel unworthy, why you don't feel good enough. Now, read these words back to yourself.  Turn to a page in your journal to your list of strengths and achievements. See how awesome you are?

Paul O'Sullivan was around his Baltimore apartment one evening, feeling bored. Having nothing better to do, he logged on the social network to find out how many others 1 his name. Moments later, many Paul O'Sullivans popped out. On a whim (一时兴起), he decided to 2 friend requests to them all.

They created a music video for "Namesake" in 2020, which pulled in more than 20,000 17 in its first two weeks online. Now, a new source of 18 for the Pauls is to spend time with each other in person.

"What are the odds," says Baltimore Paul, that a random 19 would lead not only to new music but to lasting 20 as well? "Some things are just meant to be".

Born in 551 BC, Confucius is considered a great  (philosophy) in the history of China. He founded Confucianism, a school of thought  deeply influenced later generations. He was also the first Chinese person  (set) up private schools and enroll students from all walks of life. His ideas were bused on the principle of "Ren" or "Loving others" while practicing self-control. He believed that "Ren" could be put into action by using the Golden Rule. Last Friday  ceremony took place in eastern China's Shandong Province to celebrate the 2,569th birthday of Confucius. The ceremony,  (hold) in the city of Qufu, Confucius' hometown, attracted government officials, LNESCO officials, scholars, students and descendants of Confucius.

Preetema, director of the Confucius Institute at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname, said she  (fascinate) by the wisdom of the ancient Chinese thinker. " a country having so much respect and admiration for Confucius, China is bound to bring more positive changes to the world," said Preetema.
