    Trees are useful to man in three important ways.

    The first important way is that they provide man with wood and other products. Trees provide not only man but also many animals with food. Without trees, many animals could not live on the Earth. It's not easy for man to live on the Earth either.

    The second important way is that trees give us shade. On a hot summer day, people are eager（渴望）to have a rest under the tree after they have a long walk. You can imagine how important the shade of a tree is to man and animals.

    The third important way is that trees help to prevent droughts and floods. However, in many parts of the world, people haven't realized the third way. They cut trees down in large numbers. In the end, they find that they have lost the best friends they had.

Dear friends,

    I am writing this letter to draw your attention to the disasters（灾难）these days. Too much rain destroyed the crops and washed the earth away. Sometimes it was too little and made plants dead. Also there was too much dust in the air. All these did great damage to our life.

    However, we made them! So it is time for us to try our best to save the Earth.

    The most important thing is to plant trees as many as possible. At the same time, we should stop cutting down trees and protect the forests. And we can save our planet through many other ways, such as saving water and using both sides of paper. Besides, don't keep TVs or computers on when you are not using them. When you leave a room, turn off the lights.

    A small action is very helpful to our planet. Please join us in the action of protecting the Earth. Let's start from the little things right around us.

    Mary's grandparents live on a farm and Mary often goes to see them on weekends. On the farm there are many  (kind) of animals, such as cows, dogs, cats and chickens. Mary likes to play with (they) because they can make her happy. Look! Mary (play) there.

    There islittle elephant on the farm. It has no mother. It never playsother animals. It often walks around alone. Mary loves it so much. Mary often tells the elephant how (happily) she is and gives the elephant some good food to eat. So the elephant is friendly to Mary.

    If it (see) Mary on the farm, it'll run to her like a little dog. Sometimes it follows her into a forest. There Mary sits on the ground and (read) a book. The little elephant stands by Mary.

    Her grandpa often asks her, "Why does the elephant like you so (many)?" "Oh,I love it, Grandpa," Mary answers.

    Grandpa thinks Mary is kind. Animals are our friends. We should love them.

    People already know a lot about animals. However, there are still some things about animals that may surprise you.

    Cows do have best friends and feel stressed when they are separated. Scientists have found that cows are very social animals and a cow always makes friends with other cows.

    During breeding season, a male penguin (企鹅) will offer a small stone to a female penguin as a gift.When the female penguin lays an egg, she and her partner may carry it on their feet, because some penguins don't build nests.

    Crocodiles (鳄鱼) swallow (吞) stones. Crocodiles always swallow their food instead of eating it like other animals. They swallow stones which break the food into very small pieces in their stomachs.

    Elephants use plants to treat pain or other illness. Scientists once found a pregnant (怀孕的) elephant in Africa who ate a kind of plant which was not part of her normal food.The same plant was used by the local pregnant women.
