When your pen is broken, the battery in your toy runs out, or you have some leftover food, what do you do with these things? You will probably throw them all into one trashbin. But actually, all of these pieces of trash need to be sorted (分类) separately. Garbage sorting is a big problem worldwide. In recent years, some Chinese cities have been working hard on it. Shanghai has worked with Alipay to create a "green account (账户)" service for its residents (居民). Account holders get points by correctly sorting their garbage. Through the Alipay app, they can exchange the points for milk, phone cards and other products. The city is asking all of its residents to sort their garbage into four groups: wet, recyclable (可回收的), harmful and dry. Wet waste is also known as household waste. "They are things you don't want but that pigs can eat," Guangzhou Daily explained. Paper, metal (金属), glass and other things that can be reused are recyclable waste. Harmful waste includes things like medicine, batteries and fluorescent bulbs (荧光灯泡). Finally, any waste that's not wet, recyclable or harmful will go in the "dry waste" bin. Many other Chinese cities are also using this method to sort their garbage. For example, Shenzhen has been sorting its garbage into the same four groups since 2012. Students there also receive waste-sorting guidebooks that they must study. China is improving its waste-sorting efforts. There is still a long way to go. But it's never too late to learn how to sort your trash properly and protect the environment. If you don't sort your garbage, all of it will go to a landfill (垃圾填埋场) and be buried together. These landfills can take up large areas of ground that could have been used for planting trees. The electronic waste you throw away, such as batteries, can pollute the soil and water. Other pieces of garbage, like the metal part of a pen, can be used to make other things if they are properly recycled.

A road is a bridge between two places. The Silk Road has been there between East and West for more than 2,000 years. But did you know that the Silk Road is not a single route? It is actually a series of trade and cultural transmission(传送) routes. It started to take shape during the Western Han Dynasty. The trade route started from the city of Xi'an in Shaanxi province and ended in eastern Europe, near today's Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea. The Silk Road was about 6,500 kilometers long. It went across one-fourth of the earth. The Silk Road got its name because Chinese silk used to be carried along this road. Besides silk, jade (玉), tea and steel also went west to Rome. From the West came glass, gems (宝石), and foods like carrots and sesame. The Silk Road was very important to both China and the rest of the world. Not only trade, but also knowledge about science, arts and literature, as well as craftsmanship and technology, was shared across the Silk Road. In this way, languages and cultures developed and influenced each other. Today, many historical sites along the Silk Road are popular travel destinations, such as the Terracotta Warriors (兵马俑) in Xi'an and Mogao Grottoes (莫高窟) in Dunhuang. A new train line, the New Orient Express, is running from Beijing across the Silk Road.

As he walked out of the Louvre Museum in Paris, France, he looked like a normal repairman. But what he carried was very unusual. Under his jacket, Vincenzo Perugia was carrying Mona Lisa, one of the most famous paintings in the world. And he was stealing it! It sounds difficult to believe, but it's a true story. On August 20, 1911, Perugia went into the museum and hid. He waited 15 hours until the next morning. On the day of the crime, the museum was closed for repairs. Perugia walked out into the museum wearing the same kind of clothes as the other repairmen. No one paid attention to him as he walked out the door. Police looked all over the world—Russia, Japan, and Brazil. They even interviewed Perugia, but they let him go! Police continued to look for the painting. Two years passed before Perugia brought Mona Lisa to a man in Florence, Italy, who dealt in art. Florence is the city where Leonardo da Vinci painted Mona Lisa. Unfortunately for Perugia, the art dealer called the police, who arrested(逮捕) him. Perugia said he wanted to return Mona Lisa to its "real" home. The police believed he wanted to sell copies of the painting and keep the original for himself. To this day, nobody really knows why he did it.

The name of our galaxy(星系), the Milky Way, comes from its appearance. It's a milky white band of glowing light that spreads across the night sky. If you look up at the evening sky, there's a good chance you will not be able to see what your grandmother saw when she was a little girl. A new study says that nearly 80 percent of people in North America can't see the Milky Way because of light pollution. The most light-polluted country in the world is Singapore where researchers found that people living in the country never have the chance to experience true darkness. Other countries with large percentages of people living under such skies include Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. Too much light has a direct influence on human physiology and behavior. It can also destroy our sleep cycle. What's more, it also influences wildlife. For example, baby turtles may not swim into the ocean because of street lights near shorelines. In the U.S., some communities have been taking action on light pollution but in developing countries, people still want to make bigger, brighter light, like LED lights. They can save energy, but on the other hand, they will increase light pollution rapidly in fact. There are still people that can remember when they used to be able to see the Milky Way, when they would walk outside at night, but those are becoming fewer and fewer. Nighttime natural scenery needs protection just like daytime scenery. Don't let the light pollution steal the chance to experience the wonder of a natural night sky from us.
