Gardening is popular in many parts of the world. It brings us sweet smelling flowers, fresh fruit and vegetables. But you can get more from your garden. Gardening helps to keep healthy. Today's people sit indoors for too long and don't get much exercise. When you garden, you have to move around. It's a good chance for you to exercise your body by watering flowers or doing some digging. Besides, when you are in your garden, you can feel the warm sunshine. This means you are getting Vitamin D. It helps your bodies use calcium(钙), which is necessary to keep your bones (骨骼) strong. ________________ It gets them off computers, televisions and phones. Gardening can be a great teacher to teach children about nature and healthy eating. It can also help them to understand the meaning of" No pains, no gains." Gardening is a great way to meet people and build relationships. When you are gardening, you are outdoors. So it is a perfect time to communicate with your neighbors. Most people love to talk about their hobbies, and so do gardeners. They usually enjoy showing people what they are growing. And most enjoy sharing advice and stories about their gardens.

My husband and I were taking care of Lizzy, our daughter Debra's pet dog, on April 17 while Debra was in hospital. We received a message from our son-in- law, Joe, that Debra was about to give birth. Tom and I sprang from our chairs suddenly. It's a tradition in our family to wait at the hospital of a birth. This would be Debra and Joe's first child, "You take Lizzy out before we leave, and I'll be waiting for you in the car!" I told Tom. I started the car and waited impatiently. I saw my husband walk out of the front door but at that moment Lizzy shot out and ran down the street at a great speed, My husband ran after the dog and I followed in my car. "Lizzy! Lizzy!" We shouted as fear filled my heart, we ran after her down our Bellwood Street, "She's running on Wireless Road!" We both cried with fear. Lizzy ran up and down in the busy street. My husband kept running after her, out of breath, I shouted to my husband, "Tom, be careful when you cross the street!" Within minutes, traffic was actually stopped on Wireless Road. Several good people got out of their cars to help us to get the dog back. Soon, she ran into a safer area and back to our street, with the help of six strangers, we caught her within a few minutes, everyone cheered, and we thanked the helpers again and again. With Lizzy safely back inside, we drove straight to the hospital at once and were able to see our daughter in the delivery room(产房). My husband and I were forever thankful to the strangers who might have saved Lizzy's life and who enabled us to be there at the beginning of a precious new one.

How nice are you? Do you give money to homeless people? Do you offer your seat to someone in need on a bus? Many people believe that confident people think more highly of themselves, while those who have low self-esteem(自尊) think less of their good qualities. However, a new study says it might not be true. The study was done by Jonathan Freeman, a psychology professor from the University of London. UK. He found that 98 percent of British people consider themselves to be among the nicest 50 percent of the population. In the study, Freeman first asked some people to judge their own niceness. Then he got people to answer questions like "Do you give directions to strangers?" and" Have you ever donated blood?" The results showed that people are not as nice as they think they are. One fourth of them hardly give directions on the streets, two thirds of them seldom helped others carry heavy shopping bags, and only a quarter of them donated blood. In another study by psychologists from universities in Chicago and Virginia, US, some people were shown pictures of themselves. Some pictures had been slightly changed to make them appear more attractive. When asked to pick the pictures, people usually chose the more attractive ones. So, why do we think we're nicer than we actually are? There are many opinions. A popular one says we deceive(欺骗) ourselves, so that we can get confidence without knowingly lying to ourselves or each other. How can we solve it? Other studies show that there is a simple way: feedback. Compare others' opinions toward yourself with your own and you will see a clearer picture. In this way, we may view ourselves objectively(客观地) and then push ourselves to be better.

Travel Tips for Holidays Abroad Everyone loves holiday abroad. They give us the chance to see some sights, have some fun and relax. However, holidays aren't always a great experience. Follow these tips to make sure you enjoy your holiday.
Have you packed your passport? Your tickets? Every year, thousands of people miss flights because they've forgotten their passport, they arrive at the airport too late, or even go to the wrong airport!
How much do you know about the place you are going to visit? Learning a little about the culture of a country will help you understand the people. Learning a few words of another language can also help you make new friends.
Try to reduce the pollution you cause. Travel by train if you can. Flying produces twenty times more carbon dioxide(二氧化物) than travelling by train. Of course, it might be impossible to avoid flying, but when you arrive, use buses or trains instead of taxis.
You can help a local community a lot by staying in local hotels and eating in local restaurants. This means that your money will go to local people, rather than to a large international company.
You don't want to forget your holiday. Make a scrapbook—a book of memories—about your holiday. You can show it to friends, or just use it to remember all the good times you had! And don't forget the new friends you made on holiday. Did you promise to send them pictures or presents? Don't forget to do it! Then next time you go on holiday, you can visit them again. |
