It may seem as if Mother's Day was invented by a company named Hallmark, but people have been taking time on the calendar to give a shout-out to Mom for a long time. The Greeks and Romans had mother goddess festivals - although their celebrations didn't involve the menfolk taking their underappreciated mothers out to dinner. A more recent tradition was Mothering Sunday, which developed in the British Isles during the 16th century. On the fourth Sunday in April, young men and women who were living and working apart from their families were advised to return to their mothers' houses.

Mother's Day as it is observed in the United States started in the 1850s with Ann Jarvis, a West Virginia woman who held "Mothers' Work Days" to promote health and hygiene (卫生) at home and in the workplace. During the Civil War, Jarvis organized women to improve sanitary conditions for soldiers on both sides, and after the war she became a peacemaker, furthering the cause by bringing together mothers of Union and Confederate soldiers and promoting a Mother's Day holiday.

Jarvis's work inspired another 19th-century woman, Julia Ward Howe. In 1870 Howe published her "Mother's Day Proclamation", which envisioned (设想) the day not as appreciation of mothers by their children but as an opportunity for women to exercise their collective power for peace. Howe started holding annual Mother's Day celebrations in Boston, her hometown, but after about a decade she stopped footing the bill and the tradition faded away.

It was Jarvis's daughter Anna who succeeded in getting Mother's Day recognized as a national holiday. After her mother died, in May 1905,Anna started holding yearly ceremony on the anniversary and conducting a tireless PR campaign to have the day made a holiday. In 1908 she succeeded in enlisting the support of John Wanamaker, the Philadelphia department store magnate and advertising pioneer, and by 1912 West Virginia and a few other states had adopted Mother's Day. Two years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution declaring the second Sunday in May a national holiday.

It wasn't long, though, before whatever ideals the day was supposed to celebrate were buried under an amount of greeting cards and candy. By the 1920s Anna Jarvis was campaigning against the holiday she had been instrumental in creating. "I wanted it to be a day of emotionalism, not profit," she said.

  1. (1) It can be inferred from the first paragraph that ______.
A . mothers didn't get enough appreciation in the past B . Mother's Day was invented by Hallmark C . young people all returned to their mothers' houses D . Greeks and Romans were the first to celebrate Mother's Day
  2. (2) Who plays the most significant role in creating Mother's Day?
    A . Ann Jarvis. B . Julia Ward Howe. C . Woodrow Wilson. D . Anna Jarvis.
  3. (3) Why did Anna Jarvis go against celebrating Mother's Day in the 1920s?
A . Because it was extremely emotional. B . Because the festival was not profitable. C . Because the celebrations went against the original spirit. D . Because the day was celebrated in the form of exchanging greeting cards and candy.
  4. (4) Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A . The Definition of Mother's Day B . The Argument on Celebrating Mother's Day C . The Story Behind the Creation of Mother's Day D . Different Forms of Celebration on Mother's Day

Every year in June or July, under the Arctic midnight sun, Sámi reindeer-herding families in northern Finland, Norway and Sweden come together for one of the biggest social events of the year "earmarking"-marking the new reindeer calves (幼崽) to identify them.

They gather the wild reindeer stretching out dozens of square kilometers across the Arctic circle. Even young children are expected to join in. The youngest boys and girls help catch the calves. From the age of about 10,they take their own earmarking knives, grab a calf, and mark both ears with a unique pattern.

The Sámi children not only participate in herding work, but are also encouraged to act independently in most areas of life. They have a say in deciding when to eat, when to sleep, and what to wear, even at temperatures of -30℃ -22℉). For the Sámi, developing flexible sleep habits is the best way to help children cope with the extreme Arctic seasons. During the bright Arctic nights, it is also normal for older children of 12 or so to go fishing with friends at night, and only come home in the early morning hours.

This difference contrasts with the child-centered parenting style that has been on the rise in many societies around the world. Even when compared with nearby communities, such as non-Sámi Norwegians, Sámi families are distinct.

One related study in Norway found that Sámi children were more "socially independent than their Norwegian peers", and that "self-regulation of food and sleep were commonly practiced in the Sámi". Sámi children were also expected to regulate and control their own emotions, a pattern that is common in their communities. Adults don't do everything for children. The action is based on freedom, whether the question is about changing sleeping cycles, choosing hobbies or something else. Parents don't plan things that much.

  1. (1) What tradition do Sámi families observe every summer?
A . They require their kids to sleep less. B . They travel across the Arctic for food. C . They celebrate the coming of the summer. D . They catch reindeer calves and earmark them.
  2. (2) How different are the Sámi families from nearby communities?
A . They mainly live on reindeer-herding. B . Their children are taught in a strict way. C . Their children enjoy more freedom in life. D . They stick to their child-centered parenting.
  3. (3) Which of the following can best describe the Sámi children?
    A . Talented and practical. B . Independent and self-disciplined. C . Considerate and carefree. D . Easy-going and hardworking.
  4. (4) Which can be a suitable title for the text?
    A . Arctic Survival Parenting B . The Reindeer Earmarking C . The Sámi's Sleeping Habits D . Protecting Arctic Reindeer

It may come as a surprise that human beings are not alone in inventing vaccine (疫苗). Work published in the Journal of Experimental Biology by Gyan Harwood of the University of Illinois, confirms that honeybees got there first.

The scientists discovered in 2015,that queen bees vaccinate their eggs before they are laid. The vaccine is some pieces of proteins (蛋白质) from diseasing-causing pathogens (病原体). They act as antigens (抗原) which cause a protective immune (免疫的) response. But it raised the question:how the queen received her antigen? For she is fed purely on royal jelly (蜂王浆),a thing produced by nurse bees. Meanwhile, work bees fly out looking for food to feed nurse bees. Dr Harwood therefore wondered if the nurses received the pathogens while eating the food from the outside, and then got them into their royal jelly, as the queen's food at last.

To find the answer, Dr Harwood collected 150 nurse bees and divided them among six queenless mini boxes equipped with baby bees to look after. They fed the nurses on sugar-water, and for three of the boxes he placed Paenibacillus, a bacterium (细菌) causing young bees' death.

In this case, Dr Harwood marked the dead bacteria with a color, to make their footprint easy to track. And, sure enough, microscope confirmed that pieces of Paenibacillus were getting into royal jelly produced by those bees which had been fed with sugar-water, which is thought to help bee develop immune system.

All told, these findings suggest that nurse bees are indeed, via their royal jelly, passing antigens on to the queen for transferring into her eggs. They also mean, because baby bees, too, receive royal jelly for the first few days after the birth, that the nurses are vaccinating the baby bees as well. Each baby bee is therefore being vaccinated twice.

  1. (1) What did Dr. Harwood want to prove in Para2?
A . What causes an immune response. B . Whether the nurses brought in the antigen. C . Why honeybees have strong immune system. D . How the queen got the antigen.
  2. (2) How did Dr Harwood confirm his idea?
A . By tracking the colored bacteria. B . By comparing the boxes. C . By dividing the nurse bees. D . By feeding sugar water.
  3. (3) Where can we find the passage?
    A . A business website. B . A lifestyle magazine. C . A Sci-tech textbook. D . A biology paper.
  4. (4) What's the finding of Dr Harwood?
A . The queen passes antigens through sugar water into their eggs. B . The nurses also vaccinate the baby bees through royal jelly. C . The honeybees are the first to invent vaccines in the world. D . The baby bees are vaccinated by the queen twice.

Easy Ways to Keep Your Brain Sharp

Everyone is forgetful, but as we age, we start to feel like our brains are slowing down a bit-and that can be a very annoying thing.  Read on for some techniques worth trying.

People who regularly made plans and looked forward to upcoming events had a 50 percent reduced chance of Alzheimer's disease(早老性痴呆症),according to a recent study. There's evidence that people who have a purpose in life or who are working on long or short-term goals appear to do better. In other words, keep your brain looking forward.

Go for a walk.

Mildly raised glucose (葡萄糖) levels can harm the area of the brain that helps you form memories and physical activity can help get blood glucose down to normal levels. In fact, exercise produces chemicals that are good for your brain.

Learn something new.

Take a Spanish class online, join a drawing club, or learn to play cards. A study found that mental stimulation (刺激) limits the weakening effects of aging on memory and the mind. But the best thing for your brain is when you learn something new and are physically active at the same time. Or go dancing with your friends.

A. Focus on the future.

B. This can be especially harmful to the aged.

It was about ten years ago. It was a cold, wet and dark winter day. A fine rain was falling, which left my clothes wet through and froze my bones. I was walking over to visit my Dad. Although his house was only a short walk from mine, I was already wet and suffering. I knocked on his door and stepped in. A warm steam was floating from the kitchen. It touched my nose and suddenly I was eight years old again. Dad was making Grandma's special sauce (料).

When I was growing up, every Sunday Grandma would make us an Italian feast. She would cook her spaghetti (意大利面) sauce for hours. Then she would drop in potatoes, chicken, meat balls, sausage and sometimes even steak (牛排). It always left our stomachs full, our hearts happy, and the house smelling sweet.

I sat down while Dad made me a plate. It felt so good having a meal like I used to when I was a boy. We talked about those old times and laughed over the memories both good and bad. And I noticed something too. I didn't feel cold anymore. Oh, my clothes were still wet from the rain but my heart was warm, my spirit was light, and both my face and stomach were smiling.

Dad and Grandma have been gone for years now. I still miss them both every single day. And although my daughter and I both know how to make Grandma's special sauce, we don't cook it as often as we can. Maybe it is because no matter how hard I try, I can never get it 100% right. I think that maybe I am missing a material. Or maybe it was just the Love with which Grandma and Dad cooked it that made it so delicious.

Paragraph 1:

I decided to make the food filled with love at last.

Paragraph 2:

I want to give a taste of love to the seniors in the nursing home nearby.
