    There is a famous American writer called Jack London. He was born on January 12, 1876 in San Francisco, California. His family was very poor, and Jack had to leave school to make money. He worked very hard in many different jobs.

    Later Jack returned to school, but he didn't stay there. In 1897, he went to Alaska (阿拉斯加) to look for gold. He didn't find any gold. Instead (代替), he found ideas for his books and stories. He returned home and started to write. His writings were so successful that he became rich and famous in his twenties.

    But Jack London was not a happy man. In poor health he took his own life in 1916. He was only 40 years old.

    During the day we work and play, and at night we sleep. Our bodies rest while we sleep. In the morning we are ready to work and play again. When we are asleep, our bodies grow most. Too little sleep will make us tired. Tired children need sleep.

    We can get better at our lessons after having plenty of rest. Boys and girls of eight or nine years old need ten hours of sleep every night. Our bodies need lots of air when we sleep. If we do not get enough fresh air we'll feel tired when we wake up. While in bed, we must not cover our heads. If we do, our lungs(肺) will not get enough fresh air. If we open our windows at night, we can have plenty of fresh air. Cool air is good for us. Boys and girls who want to be strong must get lots of sleep.

    Tom is a good boy, but he cannot get up early. He often sleeps until nine or ten o'clock in the morning. His mother doesn't want him to be late for school. So she buys him an alarm clock. She says to him, "You must get up when you hear the clock ring" "Yes, Mum." Tom says. And from then on, Tom gets up when he hears the clock ring at six thirty every morning. One day his mother forgets to ring up the clock. And the next morning Tom doesn't get up at six thirty. It's time for breakfast. Mother goes to wake him up. Tom is in bed and his eyes are open. He says to his mother, "I wake up very early."

    "Then why don't you get up?" Mother asks.

"But," answers Tom, "You tell me that I must get up when I hear the clock ring. So I am now waiting for the clock ring."

    My name is Sam. I joined a club called" passing help" last month. Now let me tell you why I joined it.

    One evening this May, on my way home my old car was broken. It was 25 miles from my home. I wanted to take a taxi, but there was no car. I decided to take a bus home. I went to a bus stop nearby.

After a while, a bus came, but it did not go to my town. The bus driver was a young woman. She was kind and she told me which bus I should take. I waited there for about thirty minutes, but no bus came. At last a car came to me and a woman came out of the car. She was just the bus driver.

    "When I reached the bus station, I got to know that the bus to your town couldn't come, so I returned here. I just can't leave you here," she said," Get in my car and I will take you back to your home."

    "It is a long way." I said.

    "Come on, sir, "she said," Let's go."

    On the way she told me a story. A few days ago, there wasn't gas(汽油）in her car. An old man drove her up to a gas station and then back to her car.

    When we got to my home, I wanted to give her some money to thank her, but she didn't accept it." I only want to help others and do something nice for somebody. Pass it along." She said.
