When I was 6, my elder brother brought me to the local BMX (自行车越野) track to ride in a kids' race for the first time. The hill out of the starting gate looked so scary that I backed off. My parents took me back for another try the next week. I fell almost immediately but still managed to win the second place. I've loved racing ever since.

I turned pro at 15, which isn't possible now. You have to be 17 to compete professionally. Around the time I went pro, BMX became an Olympic sport and I decided to pursue it after high school. I'm the youngest woman with a professional title in the United States.

BMX isn't judged on tricks or how you handle barriers, but it's an extreme sport. It's like horse racing mixed with riding a roller coaster. It starts with a huge burst of speed — I go 40 mph by the time I'm two and a half seconds out of the gate. Then I try to come out in front of seven competitors at the end of the track, which includes 40-foot jumps. I keep chasing the high that comes from prestart nervousness, big jumps, and that feeling of crossing the finish line first.

Strength and balance are key in competition, so I work out at least five days a week to prepare. I do tons of resistance and agility (灵活) training, both on and off the bike. I also do mental drills with a sports psychologist to make sure I'm focused and confident going into competition. If I make a mistake on the course, I have to move on. Everyone is out to beat me; I need to concentrate on winning so my competitors can't capitalize on an error and pass me!

I was so proud to win a silver medal at the Olympics in Rio, but I felt I was capable of gold, so that will push me to do better. I'm continually working to reach my potential in the sport. Until I feel completely satisfied, I'll keep coming back.

  1. (1) What do we know about the author?
A . She withdrew from her first BMX race. B . She became the youngest BMX rider in America. C . Her parents forced her to turn BMX professional. D . Her efforts resulted in BMX entering the Olympics.

A . jump highest B . focus her attention C . play tricks D . keep balanced all the way
  3. (3) The underlined phrase "capitalize on" in Paragraph4 probably means          .
A . make up for B . keep an eye on C . take advantage of D . take notice of

At the beginning of Grade Two, I joined the cross-country running team in our school.

When I came to the first practice, I was filled with optimism. But as the distance we ran in each practice gradually increased from three to four, to six miles, I realized with surprise that no matter how hard I tried, I wasn't able to run as fast as others. In fact, I was one of the slowest on the team.

What was the point of putting myself through so much pain? After the first few weeks, I wanted to quit.

Then we had our first cross-country meet.

When we started the race, I felt the great pressure of expectations sink onto my shoulders. And after a while I stopped running and struggled to walk up the hill. But then I heard my coaches shouting my name from the top of the hill. I felt confused and embarrassed; why were they cheering for me? I was running terribly! As I tried my best to finish the race, I realized that my coaches didn't care how fast I ran. Neither did my teammates. During the rest of the season, they were always on the sidelines of every race, cheering for me just as loudly as they'd cheered for the front runner.

From then on, I began to put my effort into supporting my teammates instead of focusing on my own performance. In that way, I celebrated my teammates' victories as if they were my own; I felt their pain and exhaustion as if they were my own.

Cross-country running made me realize I don't need to be the best to be successful in life. It taught me to value my relationships with people more than my relationship with my ego. It taught me to cheer for others even if I don't know their names.

  1. (1) Why did the author want to give up after the first few weeks?
A . He had much pain in his knees. B . He didn't perform well in long-distance running. C . He couldn't get along well with others D . He showed no interest in running.
  2. (2) Which of the following can best describe the coaches?
    A . Strict and hard-hearted. B . Brave and adventurous. C . Considerate and supportive. D . Optimistic and humorous.
  3. (3) After his first cross-country race, the author ________.
A . lost himself in victories B . put more effort into his study C . received more support from his coaches D . started caring about his teammates
  4. (4) What did the author realize from his experience?
A . The importance of team spirit B . The value of competition C . The secret of winning a race D . The benefits of doing sports

Lazy people will never gain anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.

One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep. Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.

Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more positive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. Laziness appears when you no longer feel in charge of your own mind.

Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness. Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child. Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.

Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. To fight family laziness, set an example. Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated (积极的) people.

Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness. Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.

  1. (1) How many ways have been mentioned in this passage to defeat laziness?
    A . 3 B . 4 C . 5 D . 6
  2. (2) According to Paragraph 2, we can know that ________.

  3. (3) The underlined word "temptations" is closest in meaning to _______.
    A . tradition B . reaction C . attractions D . introduction
  4. (4) Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

People are always denying their pain. They don't want to recognize it because they want to be sensed as okay. People are so concerned about being cool and being popular that they don't want to be the person with problems.

Talking about matters will help you deal with what is bringing you down. Figuring out what makes you feel painful can be very beneficial because a lot of the time we are so mixed up with our emotions that we need to sort them out with others' help. Find someone you trust and open your heart to them. Talk to an adult, a tutor or your parent. You'd be surprised to learn how kind people will be. They are willing to make sure you are okay and if you're not, they want to do whatever they can to help you.

It's always okay to have secrets and things you simply want to keep to yourself. However, if something is really disturbing, meaning that you can't stop thinking about it, and that it is really bothering you, then you have to try to open up and talk about it. If you really don't want anyone to know, but still feel the need to talk about the issue and get help, there are hot lines in your area that you can call. The worst thing is to suffer alone. Remember that you deserve to be heard and you deserve to be helped.
