I come to the United States ten year ago. I would always say that I was trying to study, but there were always things like work and my kids that would not allow me to start.

Now I realized that those were only excuses. What stopped me was that I was afraid to start studying again. I always believed I would learn by myself.

One day, however, my son told me that he was sad because his friends would come over and I didn't understand them because I didn't speak English. He was also sad because I could never help him with his homework. That same day, I told myself, "Rocio, you have to start believing in yourself and you will see you can make it."

The next day, I went downtown to look for a big banner (横幅) in front of the school which said that they offered classes for adults. I came in to see if I could join, but the classes were closed already. That night I took the kids to the movies, and on the way back, I told them we would take a new route. I ended up getting lost. That's the way I found Chaffey College. The following Monday, I went to ask for information. They told me that summer school was starting that week.

That's how I started studying English last summer. It is difficult, but I have had great rewards. My daughter had to write a story for school. It was about the female they most admired and why. She wrote that I was the person she most admired because I had started going to College. I will never forget this.

    A . teacher B . doctor C . father D . mother
  2. (2) What made the author make up her mind to study English?
A . What her son said. B . What her daughter said. C . Thinking about herself. D . Thinking about her daughter.
  3. (3) How did they find Chaffey College?
A . On the way to the movies. B . They took a new route and got lost. C . Ask a stranger for information. D . According to the banner.
  4. (4) Which of the following is NOT true?
A . The author came to the United States from another country. B . The author had two children at least including one daughter. C . What really changed the author's life was she believed in herself. D . The author wrote that she was the person her son most admired.

In America, when the eighth graders leave the middle school, they are often worried about moving to the high school. It is a hard time for them, but it can be an exciting one as well. To make it easier, students need to get familiar with their school.

Even though they've done this already in the middle school, it's still important to find where their classrooms are. Most schools take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth grade year. And, most schools also have a freshman speech for parents and students before the first year begins. Sometimes the main office will give away a map of the school. This can help students and parents to find different places of the school.

One way to know your high school more and make new friends is to join a club or play a sport. Schools often offer chances to join different clubs and sports. Fall activities begin in August before the first day of school. If you are not interested in sports, there are clubs for any interest, such as drama, dance, chess, photography, community service, etc. These clubs allow students from different grades. By joining an activity, students can find new friendships, not to mention improving their chances in future college applications (申请). The school office will have a list of activities offered at the school and information on how to join them.

What's more, to have a great start to a high school year, students can write down some of their worries, and ask for help from teachers and school workers.

  1. (1) Which of the following is TRUE about the school clubs?
A . There are fewer students from higher grades in the school clubs. B . The school clubs in high school only welcome sports fans. C . Summer activities begin before school starts. D . The school office can help new students join school clubs.
  2. (2) When do many schools take students to visit their new high school?
A . Before the eighth grade year starts. B . Right after the high school year starts. C . At the beginning of the new term in the high school. D . At the end of their eighth grade year.
  3. (3) What is the purpose of this text?
A . To tell the new students how to learn in high school. B . To introduce new schools. C . To give the teachers some advice. D . To give advice to new high school students.
