Do you fee bad when your fiend has something that you want, but you don't? The other day, I got a letter from a girl. She said that her friend just got a dog Her friend talked about the dog all the time. It made the girl feel bad because she didn't have one. Here's what I wrote back to her:

In our lives, some people have nicer homes and better jobs than us. For example, your friend has a cute dog, but you don't have one. It's quite natural to want things that we can't have, but we can think in another way, we should appreciate what we already have, or feel happy for people who have the thing we want.

In fact, having a dog needs a lot of hard work. Dogs need care, exercise and love. You also have to do a lot of cleaning for it. If you can't do that, dog hair and dirty paw prints (爪印) would be everywhere in your home.

It's great to spend time with dogs, so why don't you ask your friend if (是否) you can join her when she takes her dog out for a walk? If you do that, you may spend some fun time with your friend and get some exercise by walking.

And who knows—one day, you might own your own dog, too.

  1. (1) What was the girl's problem?
A . She didn't like dogs. B . Her friend had a dog but she didn't. C . She didn't like her friend. D . She felt sad because her dog was lost.
  2. (2) What does the writer think of the girl's problem?
    A . Hard. B . Important. C . Boring. D . Natural.
  3. (3) What does the underlined word "appreciate" mean in Paragraph 2?
    A . 失去 B . 理解 C . 珍惜 D . 讨厌
  4. (4) What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A . Keeping a dog is not easy. B . Nicer homes are necessary for dogs. C . Dogs need care, exercise and love. D . You can keep dogs everywhere at home.
  5. (5) The writer wants the girl to _________________.
A . ask her parents to buy her a dog B . do something else with her friend C . join her friend to walk the dog together D . write to her friend to show her feelings

One day, a fox was walking through the woods (树林) when he saw some tasty grapes hanging from a branch (树枝) high above him. He was quite hungry.

First, the fox tried to jump in the air and grab the grapes. But with each jump, he was just inches (英寸) away from getting the grapes. As he jumped and jumped, he was getting further and further away from the grapes. After a short rest, he tried taking a few steps back and doing a running jump at the grapes—but again, he could not reach them.

He even tried to climb the tree to reach the grapes, but his paws (爪子) weren't strong enough for him to pull himself up the tree. How he wished he had the same paws as a monkey.

He sat and looked at the grapes angrily.

Just then, a bear happened to walk by the fox. He saw the fox looking at the grapes. The fox turned to him and said, "Never mind. Those grapes probably don't taste good anyway. "And with that, he turned once more and left.

The bear reached up, grabbed the grapes and ate them. They were, of course, quite delicious. "Why not ask me for help?" The bear thought.
