Amazing Waterfalls (瀑布) From All over the World Sutherland Falls Sutherland Falls is located in Fiordland, New Zealand, and it shows, an amazing 1,902-foot fall. Donald Sutherland discovered the waterfall in 1880 and he was the first to focus his eyes on the beautiful waterfall. With a striking lake at the top of the falls and mountains set in the background there, it is a really good view. Detian Falls This waterfall is on the border of China and Vietnam. It is about 300 feet wide, 164 feet high and comes from Guichun Boundary River. Located in the foreground are beautiful rice and vegetable fields and the background is nothing but the jungle. While Detian Falls may be great, it is not respected as one of the best waterfalls on the planet and we think that isn't fair. Gocta Falls While Gocta Falls has been an important place for the locals of Peru for centuries, it wasn't really known to the rest of the world until 2005! This is an unbelievable fact that Gocta Falls is among the five highest waterfalls on the entire planet, about 2,490 feet high. This is probably the farthest trip on the list but the views are worth it. McWay Falls McWay Falls is located on the Central Coast of California near Big Sur. While this water-fall looks completely tiny compared-to many others on this list, it is still a worthwhile destination. This waterfall is only 80 feet high but it feeds into a beautiful bay right off the Pacific Ocean. With the endless ocean to your left, a waterfall to your back, and comfortable rocks keeping you in the bay, there is no more beautiful place to be.

Myrtle MacDonald, a 99-year-old woman, and a high school student in British Columbia have formed a wonderful friendship through a program that connects seniors with young people. MacDonald said that she signed up for the local program organized by the Compassionate Neighbourhood Health Partners Society (CNHPS) after feeling isolated during the pandemic(流行病).She was paired with Jaelyn Bjornerud-Brown, 17, a high school student, based on their common interest-nursing. "I've just found Bjornerud-Brown is more interested in nursing than I expected. It has also filled my empty mind. Her company makes me feel like I'm not alone," said MacDonald. For the high school students taking part in the program, the time spent with seniors can be used for volunteer hours needed for graduation. They're supposed to speak with seniors for 30 minutes each week, but many go far beyond that. "I look forward to talking to MacDonald every week. We talk about an hour and 15 minutes, and the time just goes by so quickly," said Bjornerud-Brown. MacDonald, a former nurse, spent much of her life teaching in other parts of the world helping people in need. Those stories of her work are most inspiring to Bjornerud-Brown, who also wants to become a nurse. "In high school people often say that I should go to school, get a job, and then have kids. It's a linear(直线的) thing but talking to her has made me realize that I don't have to limit myself to one thing. I can have it all," Bjornerud-Brown said. According to the CNHPS, the program has been a blessing to both seniors and high school students. Due to the pandemic, seniors can't meet with their families and students are having trouble getting their volunteer hours. "And there has been a huge positive response from them," said the program's organizer Connie Stam. "It's just amazing to see how well they get along with each other."

Some Americans celebrate the Christian holiday of Easter, while others observe the Jewish holiday of Passover. They just look forward to the coming of spring. Easter is when Christians celebrate the life of Jesus and what they believe was his return from the dead. For most Christians. Easter this year is on Sunday, April 4. For Eastern Orthodox Christians, May 2 is Orthodox Easter Sunday. You may wonder why the date for Easter changes every year. It is one of the "movable feasts" that change each year. In English, the word "feast" can mean a religious festival as well as a large dinner. We have both of these on Easter and Passover. In the early days of Christianity, leaders decided to set the date of Easter for the first Sunday following the first full moon of the spring season. It usually happens on or shortly after the vernal equinox(春分),or spring equinox The equinox is a date when day and night are the same length. Many Christians in America attend religious services on Easter Sunday. Some of these services take place at sunrise. Children are often told stories about the Easter Bunny(兔子)who is said to hide eggs, chocolates and other sweet treats, for children to find on Easter morning. The Easter Bunny tradition probably developed from a German celebration of spring. Germans first settled in North America in the eighteenth century. Individual families and groups also organize Easter egg hunts for children. The best-known egg hunt in America is the event called the White House Easter Egg Roll. The president and the first family usually join children in hunting for eggs, playing games, and reading stories.

It is reported that at present NASA is mainly preparing for another great step in human space exploration after they made their first trip to the moon, that is 15, a journey to Mars. Every few years, NASA invites individuals to apply to become astronauts. In previous years, the largest number of applicants was 8,000 in 1978.This time, 18,300 hopeful astronauts applied. Why is there so much love, for space exploration? I recently visited the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, to find out the answer. "NASA tried to spread the announcement as widely as possible this time," said Anne Roemer, who manages the astronaut selection pro-gram. "Pop culture also worked in our favor, if you look at the movies The Martian Interstellar." In order to become an astronaut, an applicant must have a degree in science, math, or engineering, and at least three years of professional experience in his or her chosen field. Highly qualified(有资格的) applicants are called in for interviews and to go through a lengthy selection process. "NASA focuses on choosing people who can get along with others for a long period of time, know how to communicate clearly, and can listen to and understand others," said Christina Koch, an astronaut who was selected in the 2013 class. The current selection process ended in late 2018. Eight to fourteen talented applicants were chosen. They would then undergo two years of training to become mission-ready astronauts. "We do a lot of group activities," Koch said. "We get to know our teammates and learn how we can develop good risk-taking behavior." "We're farther down the path to sending humans to Mars than at any point in NASA's history," said Charles Bolden, the current NASA Administrator. With the Orion spacecraft in development, NASA is hoping to send humans to Mars sometime in the 2030s. How should astronauts prepare? "Do well at school, take part in a lot of activities, and always 'try new things," Roemer advised. Since a Mars landing is probably a few decades away, perhaps you'll be on the first flight to the red planet!

When I was 8, my dad helped me buy me the first old bike from our neighbor. I earned $ 60 by cutting grass and sweeping the snow and my dad raised the other half. 1 would pay him back over the next six months. Although it wasn't in the latest style, it was my ticket to the adult world. I spent that summer and autumn riding happily. My sister Liz never had a chance to have her own bike. We had older brothers and sisters, a few of whom 'had bad taste on bikes. Now, however, I was able to ride to every corner of the town, sometimes even as far as the beach. In those days before one gained a driver's license, owning a good bike was a proud thing. Just before the Christmas deadline to pay my dad back, we were hit by several snow-storms. This allowed me to sweep enough driveways to pay off my debt. I was now officially a bike owner. Working for a bike of my own was a special feeling unlike others. However, my joy was short-lived after my dad called my sister Liz to the kitchen. "I have one more gift for you," he said as he opened the door. There, on the steps, stood a new bike. I didn't hear her screams of joy. At the moment, all I could hear was the engine of the grass machine, the sound of the metal snow shovel(铲子) on the road. After several weeks of finding me unhappy, my dad finally pulled me aside. "Is every-thing OK?" I complained, "It's unfair, I worked so hard for my bike and it's not even new. Then Liz got a new one as soon as I made the final payment. She didn't have to do anything for it." My dad smiled. "She didn't have to do anything for it because the bike is not really completely for her," he said, and then left the room. 注意: 1)续写词数应为150左右; 2)请按照如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 What did Dad's words really mean? …… Still, I wasn't smart enough to figure out what my dad meant until years later. |
