Maltese studied international business and leadership at Marietta College in Ohio. When searching for a summer job, he found a local coffee shop that was hiring applied and was hooked.

"Applying for my first job in coffee was terrifying. Everyone looked indescribably cool and extremely knowledgeable about coffee," says Maltese. "But I gave it a shot and applied. Seeing as I had no previous coffee experience, I relied on my personality alone." Since then, Maltese has worked for and even managed several coffee shops, and now he hopes to someday run his own cafe.

Maltese's dream of becoming a barista(咖啡师) began while he was watching his favorite situation comedy Friends.in which the life of a barista seems trendy, cool, laid-back and fun. And that's exactly the image that attracted 21-year-old Maltese to the job.

But after years of work in this industry, Maltese discovered that the job takes much more than serving coffee all day long.

"I realize now that the work is not easy," he says, "and you have to really love what you're doing in order to make a career out of it.

Keeping up with streams of high demand, dynamic customers can be one of the challenges baristas face, but. Maltese says "simply making someone happy with a cup of coffee" makes it all worth it.

Maltese says working in coffee is harder and more serious than most people think the daily challenges of a barista are mainly focused on interacting(交流)with the customers as well as the staff.

"It definitely takes a lot of determination, hard work and confidence to make it in the industry," says Maltese. "If one person on the team is upset or tired, everyone suffers—including the customer. At the end of the day, we want everyone to walk away with a positive experience."

Community—based tourism (CBT) is a type of sustainable (可持续的)tourism where residents invite travellers to visit or stay in their communities with the purpose of providing an experience of the local cultures and traditions. These communities are often rural and economically struggling, and CBT gives them the oppor1unity to take full ownership of their area's individualized tourist industry as business owners, managers, service providers, and employees. Most importantly, it ensures that the economic benefits go directly towards local families.

Surveys show that travellers are becoming more interested in sustainable travel trends and supporting small businesses and unique communities. An American Express poll of travellers in Australia, Canada, India, Japan, Mexico, and the U. K. found that68% plan to be more aware of sustainable travel companies, while 72% want to help improve tourism revenue(收入)in the local economies of the destinations they visit.

CBT differs slightly from ecotourism and voluntourism. Rather than focusing specifically on nature or charity, CBT is meant to benefit the community and its environments as a whole. From the traveller's perspective. CBT offers the chance to immerse(沉浸)oneself in local cultures and participate in a completely unique tourism experience.

Responsible Travel, a UK—based activism company that has fostered sustainable travel opportunities since 2001, says that CBT can enable tourists to discover cultures and wildlife, they might not have experienced in traditional travel situations. "For many, there is nothing like making a connection with people whose lives are so very different to our own," the organization writes. "Traditional communities often have far more to teach us about our society and our life than we can teach them about our world."

CBT is often developed by the destination's local government but can also get assistance from non-profit organizations, other community numbers, private funding, or even partnerships with travel companies. Most of the time, community—based tourism projects are successful due to cooperation between the community and some kind oftourism experts.

Once common in flower—rich grasslands across the eastern United States and southeastern Canada, the rusty patched bumblebee now buzzes about in only 0.1 percent of its historical range—a trend documented among many other North American bee populations as well. There are nearly 4, 000 native bee species in North America, including 47 species of bumblebees. and many are at risk of extinction.

A photographer, Clay Bolt wanted to highlight this sad situation. He decided to start by focusing on the rusty patched bumblebee, telling its story through photographs and a 2016 film titled A Ghost in the Making.

"It broke my heart to think that if something wasn't done to protect it, specimens(标本) in museums would be all we had left," Bolt says. "I can use my photography and filmmaking skills to really bring attention to this species,"

His efforts, and those of conservationists, paid off. In 2017,thanks to a petition(请愿)filed by the Xerces Society and the Natural Resources Defense Council, the rusty patched bumblebee became the only bee 'in the continental United States to get protection under the Endangered Species Act.

Large-scale agriculture has contributed to this decline. Changes of beds natural feeding and nesting habitat to corn and soybear, fields, plus heavy pesticide use, have not only reduced native bee populations but also done harm to the insects reproduction and colony(种群)growth.

Scientists are also concerned about a fungal pathogen(真菌病原体), Nosema bombi, detected in several North American bumblebee populations, including the rusty patched bumble bee. Commercial breeding(饲养),which brings together tens of thousands of queen bumblebees from the wild to start colonies close to each other, may have allowed the naturally occurring pathogen to spread among and between species. "These colonies would get taken out to farms and the pathogen could spread to wild populations," says entomologist Sydney Cameron at the University of Illinois Urbana—Champaign.

Extreme temperatures, driven by climate change, are also linked to bumblebee declines. In a recent study, researchers found these bees missing from many locations where they had previously been recorded. Those sites experienced increased warming and more frequent unusually hot days over time.

Since 2009, a small army of cats in the Palace Museum have been receiving global social media attention.  The purpose is to defend wooden structures and priceless relics against mice.

I visited the Palace Museum in the summer of 2018 to research the history of Qing Dynasty. I stayed in a small hotel in one of Beijing's hutong areas for a whole month.  

Before setting out to the capital, I had already conducted some background research on the history of the Palace Museum itself and managed to retrieve (检索)an article about the famous palace cats.  

In the third week, as I was walking through the western gates I was surprised to spot not one. not two, but three cats on the corner of a porch(走廊) in front of an office.  The cats ignored me, preferring to take a rest in the shade next to their white painted cat houses.

I spotted three more cats inside the bamboo garden of the employees’ exercise grounds.  The slightly fats furry cat looked like the real "boss" of the palace as he made his way over to me, staring with his sharp yellow and blue eyes and letting out short, loud meows demanding attention. He was very friendly and content to be scratched behind the ear and even given u belly rub.
