Mike was in my third-grade class. All the 34 students were dear to me, but he was one in a million. Very neat in appearance, he had that happy-to-be-alive attitude which made even his occasional mischievousness (调皮捣蛋) delightful.

He often talked incessantly. I had to remind him repeatedly that talking without permission was not acceptable. What impressed me so much, though, was his sincere response every time I corrected him for misbehaving: "Thank you for correcting me, Madam!" I didn't know what to make of it at first, but before long I became accustomed to hearing it many times a day.

One Friday, after working hard on a new concept all week, I sensed that the students were frustrated with themselves and edgy (烦躁不安的) with one another. So I asked them to list the names of the other students and write down the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates. As the students left the room, each one handed me the paper.

That Saturday, I wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper and listed what everyone else had said about that individual. On Monday, I gave each student his or her list. Some of them ran two pages. Before long, the entire class were smiling. "I didn't know others liked me so much!" Mike said, “Thank you for teaching me, Madam."

No one ever mentioned those pieces of paper in class again. I never knew if they discussed them after class or with their parents.

Several years later, I got a call from Mike's parents and learned of his death. I was shocked. And then I received a billfold (钱包) with two worm pieces of notebook paper that had been taped, folded and refolded many times. I realized that the pieces of paper were the ones on which I had listed all the good things each of Mike's classmates had said about him. That's when the tears were brimful in my eyes.

  1. (1) What can we infer about Mike according to the first two paragraphs?
A . He was a chatterbox. B . He was not accepted by others. C . He turned a deaf ear to the teacher. D . He cared little about his appearance.
  2. (2) What did the author want the students to show by making the list?
    A . Congratulation. B . Appreciation. C . Understanding. D . Preference.
  3. (3) Which of the following can best describe Mike?
A . Naughty but creative. B . Gentle but impatient. C . Grateful and respectful. D . Generous and cautious.
  4. (4) What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A . Happy to Be Alive B . All the Good Things C . A Precious Billfold D . An Unforgettable Class

According to the National Alliance on Mental Health, 20 percent of children aged 13-18 suffer from a mental health condition. Those are the same years they are likely to be in school and spending most of their time with teachers and fellow students.

With the right support in place, these students might make the most of educational opportunities in order to reach their full academic potential (潜能). Yet, most students who may be dealing with a mental health condition are likely not receiving any treatment. Studies estimate more than 60 percent are not receiving services or treatment from medical or psychological service providers.

One might think, now that teachers, school psychologists (心理学家) and other educational professionals spend a lot of time with students, they could be one key way to identify children who are at risk for different conditions-and get them the help they need. But, for one, those working in the educational field are often already understaffed and overworked. Frequently, a school teacher or school psychologist may be responsible for hundreds, if not thousands of students. And, two, teachers and other staff lack the clinical (临床的) training to properly identify a true mental health condition.

In an ideal world, teachers and other staff who interact with students the most would receive extra training to help identify at-risk individuals-and then direct them to the school nurse or psychologist for a treatment. Although one in five children may suffer from a mental heath condition with the right state of mind and methods, it is possible for families and schools to work together to make sure at-risk children are getting the care they need.

  1. (1) What is most needed for the children suffering from a mental health condition?
A . Equal educational opportunities. B . More company with their teachers. C . Guidance to achieving academic potential. D . Timely mental and psychological treatment.
  2. (2) Which word can replace "understaffed" underlined in paragraph 3?
    A . Shorthanded. B . Frustrated. C . Occupied. D . Responsible,
  3. (3) How does the author develop paragraph 3?
A . By giving examples. B . By listing causes. C . By concluding rules. D . By making comparison.
  4. (4) What suggestion does the author give to teachers and other staff?
    A . Getting extra training. B . Being more friendly. C . Communicating with families. D . Showing understanding.

One of the many difficulties to humans freely exploring and inhabiting (居住) Mars is the planet's lack of oxygen. Luckily NASA's Perseverance Rover (“毅力”号火星探测器)can help. Using an instrument called MOXIE (short for Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utillzation Experiment, the rover successfully took carbon dioxide from the Martian atmosphere and turned it into oxygen. NASA said it plans to conduct more MOXIE tests.

MOXIE ran its first test for roughly an hour, producing just under six grams of oxygen. That's enough to keep an astronaut going for about 10 minutes. It won't keep someone alive for long, but it's a key step forward in exploring Mars. Not only could that oxygen be used to allow people to breathe, but it would also lighten the load for return missions to Earth, or for trips to other parts of the solar system. Rockets need oxygen to burn fuel during liftoff. Being able to create it on Mars would mean spacecraft can bring less of it from Earth, significantly cutting down their weight. Less weight means less overall fuel needed to launch rockets.

Oxygen is the heavier part of rocket fuel. If NASA wanted to get four astronauts of Mars, the spacecraft would need 27.5 tons of oxygen to do it Keeping those four breathing for a year would require about one ton. At the rate MOXIE is going, producing 27.5 tons would take more than 475 years. But future devices (设备) could be larger and more efficient than the 38-pound MOXIE. One day, we will come up with a bigger plan for humans when we finally send them there to make enough oxygen.

  1. (1) What's the function of MOXIE?
A . To conduct tests on Mars. B . To help send oxygen to Mars. C . To find new habitats for humans. D . To turn carbon dioxide into oxygen.
  2. (2) What remains to be improved in the MOXIE tests?
A . Using less fuel to launch rockets. B . Sending more astronauts to space. C . Cutting down the weight of rockets. D . Producing enough oxygen for the mission.
  3. (3) What's the author's attitude towards MOXIE?
    A . Doubtful. B . Positive. C . Indifferent. D . Unclear.
  4. (4) What's the writing style of this text?
    A . Argumentative. B . Narrative. C . Expository. D . Descriptive.

How to Be Smart with Your Money

Money is a major worry for many people. It can be easy to overspend and be left with buyer's regret. But don't worry. Here's a handful of ways that will help you use your money wisely without getting an MBA.

Prioritize your needs. Do you want to pay down debt? Or are you just looking for clothes to be more beautiful? Identify your top priorities. Do not put any money toward non-essential expenses until all of your necessary living costs have been paid.

It can be easy to get in the habit of shopping in the same place repeatedly, but taking time to shop in various places can help you find the best deals. Check in stores and online to look for the best prices for your needs. Look for stores that might be running sales or that specialize in discount.

Use cash instead of cards. For non-necessary expenses such as going out to eat or seeing a movie, set a budget. Withdraw the necessary amount of cash before you go out, and leave your cards at home.

Monitor your spending. Finally, as long as you're not spending more than you bring in, you're on target. You may prefer to check your bank account every day, or you could sign up for a money-monitoring app to help you track your spending.
