My First Marathon（马拉松）

    A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.

    I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn't do either well. He later informed me that I was "not athletic".

    The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!

    The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn't even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.

    Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!

    At mile 3, I passed a sign: "GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"

    By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.

    By mile 21, I was starving!

    As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.

    I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.

    Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a "marathon winner".

    China's hot word, tuhao, may be in Oxford English Dictionary.

    In Chinese, tu means rude and hao means rich. In recent years, people use this term to describe those who spend money in an unreasonable way. The word became more popular with Apple's gold-colored iPhone, which is loved by China's rich people. The color became known as "tuhao golden". The word is now often used to refer to people who have money but lack taste.

    There are two other Chinese hot words: dama and No Zuo No Die, which may also be taken in the dictionary. Dama, meaning middle-aged women, was first used in the Western media by the Wall Street Journal. Thousands of Chinese women were buying a large amount of gold when the gold price had gone down. Another phrase No Zuo No Die, meaning if you don't do stupid things, they won't come back to bite you, is also very popular. Other words, such as Maotai, Chinglish and dim sum have also been included in the dictionary.

    BBC World News recently made a special program called "Tuhao, let's be friends!"" The frequent use of Chinglish by foreign media suggests that foreign people are looking more to the lifestyle and popular culture of China," says Zhang Yiwu, professor of Beijing University.

    What does this trend suggest about the Chinese language's influence?

    Xing Hongbing, a professor from Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) said "These show that Chinglish is now being accepted by the rest of the world and they play important roles in daily life of Chinese. Behind these Chinglish words and phrases are the Chinese culture. They are reflections of the changes and trends in the Chinese society and they help people from other countries to understand what's happening in China."

    More and more consumers across the country are using cashless payment methods. The rapid development of third-party mobile payment tools is helping to encourage cashless payments across the country, said Dong Ximiao, a researcher at the Renmin University of China.

    Although there were 3.4 billion third-party payment accounts(帐户)in total in China in 2016. China is not the first country to seek a cashless society. Developed states like Sweden, Denmark and Singapore are also seeing that increase.

    However, the rapid development of cashless payments does not mean there are no challenges and criticisms. Alibaba's Hema store has come into the spotlight recently. Media reports said that consumers can't buy goods with cash there, which would be considered illegal.

    Alipay and WeChat Pay, the nation's two major third party mobile payment tools, also launched campaigns this month to encourage more people to use cashless payment methods, which caused concern over whether cash will soon disappear.

    "Some offline sellers refuse to accept cash, which influences the natural circulation(流通)of cash," said Dong. He stressed that a cashless society would not mean that cash would completely disappear. Also it's important to remember that nearly half of China's population live in the countries, unable to enjoy innovation (革新)brought by the Internet, Dong said. And when it comes to China's senior citizens most of them prefer to use cash in their daily lives, he added.

    "It's ridiculous(荒谬的)to question digital payment tools' contribution to financial development. In the long term, various payment methods will be used by consumers, and merchants should respect consumers' payment habits. Dong noted.

    Social media can be defined (解释) as web-based and mobile media that are used for people to interact, connect and communicate with each other. It often involves the creation and sharing of content (writing, pictures, and video) that people make themselves, mostly through the Internet.

     The first type involve people getting together to work on a project, for example, Wikipedia. Blogs and micro-blogs (such as Twitter) are another type of social media. There are other websites like YouTube that allow people to share content such as pictures, articles or videos. Another type of social media are social networking sites. Facebook is an example of this type. Many people like to play games on the Internet and, yes, there are social media games as well. These games allow gamers to interact with each other and play with or against other gamers. World of Warcraft is a good example. The final type of social media is websites like Second Life, where people can create avatars (化身) and use and create objects, as if they were in the real world.

     With social media, many individual people in different places create content. Another difference is that people who produce content in social media don't need very special skills. It takes only a few minutes to write a twitter post, for example.

     But whatever you might think, social media is here to stay.

    When I was 24, I moved into an apartment and the couple next door were loud all the time. After putting up with it for a couple of weeks, I decided to1them and politely ask them to be2after noon, as I had to work at midnight, so I3went to bed around noon.
