English is the first language of several countries. However, it has many differences. British, American, and South African English are all spoken differently. In many English language courses, the British and American differences are taught. One is not more correct than the other, but there are important differences between the two. Probably the biggest difference between American and British English is the vocabulary. Different words and expressions are used to talk about the same thing. For example, in the United States, people throw their garbage into the trash can. In England, people throw their rubbish into the dustbin. In Britain, people take a lift to the fifth floor. In America, people take an elevator. American and British grammar can be also different. For example, speakers of British English will ask "What did you do at the weekend?", but Americans usually say "on the weekend." In the United States people usually say "I've gotten a new car.", but in the UK they will say "I've just got a new car." The pronunciation in American and British English is also different, even when the spelling is the same. The word "tomato"—pronounced "to-mah-to" in British English—is a classic example of this. Vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation are three ways English is different in different parts of the world. Learning all these is not easy, so English learners should just know that they are always there.

Teenage life — better now,or in the past? Does this situation sound familiar (熟悉)? You are complaining (抱怨)to your parents about something. Maybe your computer isn't powerful enough to play the latest games. Then you hear... When I was your age, there weren't any computers or video games. And I didn't get a bike until I was sixteen. And it was second-hand. So, is it really true that life is better for teenagers now? It is certainly true that many teenagers have got more things nowadays. So parents have got more money to spend on each child. And many things are cheaper than they were when our parents were children. Forty years ago, no one could imagine a world with tiny computers and amazing smartphones. And now these things are necessary — we can't imagine living without them! However, technology often means we spend more time at home. And often it is just us with our computer or television. Teenagers don't do enough exercise. And, although young people still get on well with their friends, some people think teenagers today don't have so many social activities as they did in the past. What do you think? How is teenage life better these days?

Starting high school is a great experience for any teenager. Whether you are coming from a middle school(grades six through eight) or a junior high school(grades seven through nine), there are many things about high school that are different from your old school environment. You will face being in a new school, making new friends in an unfamiliar class and getting to know new teachers. These new teachers will usually have higher academic(学术的) level than your middle and junior-high schoolteachers. In return, they expect you to work hard and develop your skills. On top of all this, peer pressure(同伴压力) to drink and smoke often increases in high school. Although there is a lot of pressure, it is nothing you cannot deal with. If you are feeling pressure to do something that you feel is wrong, talk to a friend, parent or counselor to find a solution(解决) . If you are not succeeding academically, find someone to help you. If you feel lonely, try to join a school club or group to make new friends. With time, you will come to be thankful for everything about your experience. On the point of starting you high school, are you ready? 根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项,使短文意思通顺、内容完整。

In 1901, an Austrian scientist discovered that there are four types of blood. He named them A、B、AB and O. People have one of these four types. Blood type O is the most common around the world. Blood type A is the second most common, and blood type AB is the least common. In 1927, a Japanese doctor found that people with different blood types have different personalities (性格),too. He said that people with type A blood are usually calm and serious; people with type B blood are cheerful and outgoing; people with type O blood are generous and honest; while those with type AB blood are often caring and talented. More recently, a doctor in the United States wrote a book that connects blood types with what people eat. The book suggests people with type O blood should eat more meat and less bread. A diet for people with type A blood includes more vegetables. His book, Eat Right for Your Type, has been a hit with people who want to lose weight. However, Dr. Peter D' Adamo believes that eating food that matches a person's blood type will make the person healthier in other ways, too. (第四空三词,其余各题均两词)

Dear Kids Advice Magazine June 10, 2017 Hi, my name is Evan and being the eldest child in the family surely has its disadvantages. First of all, I have to share all my toys and games with my younger Siblings, William and Julia. Of course, they don't need to return the favour because I'm totally uninterested in their things. Besides that, Julia and William are always hanging around me. It's especially annoying when I have a friend over. We look for a secluded place in the house where they can't disturb (打扰) us, but within minutes, they've found us and are asking to join in.I just can't seem to get a moment's peace. At meal times,I have to eat whatever is on my plate regardless of the portion size or taste. William and Julia only need to try one bite when it's not their favorite food. Not only this, but I'm expected to be cooperative (合作的,配台的) at all times because I'm the oldest and need to be a role model for them. It doesn't seem fair either that I have more chores to do around the house than Julia and William put together. Plus, when it comes to practising our musical instruments,I have to practise more than double the time. Oh, and the worst part of it all is the huge quantities of homework I get compared to them. I'm feeling rather annoyed wilh my sibling situation. Can you please write back with some advice? Yours truly Evan Smith
