Shortly after graduating in 2012, Dutch fashion designer Bas Timmer heard some upsetting news. While he had been busy drawing designs for his new brand, a friend's father, who was homeless, had died of hypothermia (体温过低) just meters away from his studio. The young man set aside his personal ambitions and instead used his design skills to create Sheltersuit—a jacket that doubles as a sleeping bag to protect the world's homeless against extreme weather.

To transform the coat into a sleeping bag, the wearer simply zips (用拉链拉上) on a second piece to the bottom. The suit's large hood (兜帽) helps protect against bright street lights at night, while a built-in scarf adds warmth and protection. When not in use, the "portable shelter" can be tucked away in the accompanying backpack.

The designer had originally intended to create a limited number of Sheltersuits and then go back to develop his clothing brand. :I thought, OK, I'm going to make 100, : he says. However, demand for the product, which was an instant hit, has never stopped. Over the past four years, Timmer and his team have distributed 6, 000 Sheltersuits to the homeless in Europe.

To help pay for the production cost, Timmer set up the Sheltersuit Foundation, which accepts donations from both groups and individuals. Since March 2019, the team has also been using its factory to create clothing, bag and other things for paying customers.

Though Timmer's efforts are deserving to be praised, the special clothing is not the solution(解 决)to this serious social issue, which is largely the result of income loss and the rising house prices in US cities like San Francisco and New York. Hopefully, governments, groups and individuals will come together to find a way to help the people that are down on their luck.

  1. (1) What did Timmer do after knowing a friend's father's death?
A . He took aim at the poor. B . He went to comfort his friend. C . He closed his studio at once to design a new brand. D . He created a kind of jacket against coldness for the homeless.
  2. (2) Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase "tucked away" in paragraph 2?
    A . Raised. B . Removed. C . Put away. D . Given back.
  3. (3) What made Timmer keep producing Sheltersuits?
    A . Great demand. B . Huge profits. C . Unique styles. D . Personal ambition.
  4. (4) Why did Timmer found the Sheltersuit Foundation?
A . He found it hard to make money. B . He hoped to raise money for production. C . He was unwilling to make clothes with his own money. D . He expected more people to participate in the creation.

If you expect to work in the future in the travel industry, you should begin learning Chinese.

That's because Chinese people spent nearly$258 billion in total on international travel last year. That's more than twice the combined amount spent on international travel by people from the United States and Germany, the next two biggest-spending nations. The Chinese are relative(相对的)newcomers when it comes to traveling beyond their nation's borders and only a small percentage of them travel outside of China each year. Given the size of that nation's population. even that small percentage represents well over 100 million Chinese travelers to foreign destinations.

Yet Chinese citizens flew, on average, just 65 miles last year versus(与……相对) the 227 miles flown on average by US residents(居民), the 285 miles flown on average by Germans, the 271 miles flown on average by those from the United Kingdom, and the 632 miles flown by the average Canadian last year.

China's high total spending on international travel and its low average number of miles flown on international travel may show that while only a small percentage of China's residents actually travel outside their homeland, and those who do spend a lot of money don't go that far. But there are reasons for China's low average of miles travel on international trips. A small percentage of Chinese now have enough money to travel internationally, though the number of people who do travel outside of China is growing fast every year. Besides, a large percentage of Chinese people traveling abroad stay close to home.

However, as more and more Chinese gain the financial ability to travel internationally and as Chinese become more and more interested in visiting destinations farther and farther away from home, their spending on international travel and the average distances flown will both rise rapidly.

  1. (1) Why does the author suggest learning Chinese for the future work in travel industry?
A . Being good at Chinese is a must for future work. B . Chinese is most commonly used in travel industry. C . Travel industry requires employees to learn Chinese. D . China is a big-spending nation in international travel
  2. (2) What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A . People from different countries have different preferred destinations. B . China has a relatively low average number of miles flown on travel. C . Chinese people are more willing to travel abroad compared with Canadians. D . People going on a journey around the world hate taking international planes.
  3. (3) What are many Chinese people who travel abroad likely to do?
A . Try to save their money. B . Improve their ability to travel. C . Choose to stay close to home. D . Travel in America and Germany.
  4. (4) What does the last paragraph say about the future of Chinese people's traveling abroad?
    A . It's bright. B . It's confusing. C . It's hopeless. D . It's unclear.

For a good night's sleep, here is some expert advice: Turn off, turn in and drop off. Anyone who does the opposite—turning on an iPad or other similar electronic readers in bed — may have a harder time both dropping off to sleep and shaking that weak feeling the next morning, a new study found.

Sleep experts at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, found that the light from a tablet computer upsets the body's internal (体内的) clock while reading a printed book does not have the same effect.

An internal clock helps regulate when we sleep. Exposure to the light of day and darkness of night keeps its timing set to a roughly 24-hour cycle. Starting about two hours before bedtime, our brains start to produce a hormone called melatonin (褪黑激素), which signals our internal clock that darkness has fallen and prepares the body for sleep.

Scientists have known for long that light at night can mess with that internal clock. And it does so by suppressing(抑制)melatonin, thus preventing the body from getting the message that bedtime is near.

For their new study, the researchers recruited(招募) six men and six women, all in their mid-20s. Over two weeks, each spent four hours reading each evening before a 10: 00 pm bedtime. The volunteers read on an iPad for five nights in a row. On another five evenings they read a printed book.

Participants took nearly 10 minutes longer to fall asleep, on average, after reading on the iPads. They also spent less time in rapid-eye movement sleep which appears important for learning and storing memories.

There was no difference in hours spent sleeping after reading from either the iPad or a printed book. But how volunteers felt the next day did differ.

"Our most surprising finding is that participants using the e-reader would be more tired and take longer to become alert (警觉的) the next morning, says sleep researcher Ann-Marie Chang.

  1. (1) What is paragraph 3 intended to stress?
A . The significance of the internal clock for sleep. B . The relationship between internal clock and time. C . The necessity of going to bed earlier regularly. D . The importance of melatonin for new lifestyles.
  2. (2) What does the underlined word "it" in paragraph 4 refer to?
A . The sleep disorder. B . The delayed message. C . Light at night. D . An internal clock.
  3. (3) How did the researchers try to show the results of the study?
A . By making comparisons. B . By giving some examples. C . By explaining the principles. D . By telling causes and effects.
  4. (4) What can be a suitable title for the text?
A . An Internal Clock Has Control Over Sleep B . Electronic Readers Should Be Formally Avoided C . Reading Before the Night Sleep Leads to Health Problems D . Screen Time Before Bedtime Can Disturb the Body's Clock

Reading poetry is an art in itself. Whether you're reading someone else's poem or your own, how you read the poem can affect the meaning. If you need to read a poem in front of others, you need to take steps to read it well.

Stand up straight. When you're reading a poem in front of people, you need to show confidence.  Instead, you should stand up straight with your shoulders back, so that you can exude (散发) confidence, even if you're not feeling confident.

Make eye contact (接触).  However, it's important to know your poem well enough so that you can look up from time to time to make eye contact with the audience. It both attracts the audience and helps you show confidence.

Add proper movement. Movement can help make a poem better accepted, but only if you do it properly.  If it's a very serious, natural poem, you may not want to use any movement at all. If it's a more playful poem, movement may be more proper.

When you're in a room, make sure you are heard by all in the room. Those people in the far back need to hear, so you will often need to read louder than you normally do. If you're not sure how loud you need to speak, you can always ask if the people in the back can hear you.

A. Project (投射) to the whole room.

B. Read the poem in the loudest voice.

C. You can't make eye contact all the time while reading.

D. Eye contact shows that you are confident to use movement.

E. Particularly, you need to pay attention to your body language.

F. If you stand with your head down, that shows a lack of confidence.

G. Think about the poem itself to determine how much movement is proper.
