Traveling has always been a good way to relax. But this is not true for Xiao Lin (not her real name). In November, Xiao Lin took a trip to Lijiang, a tourist city in Yunnan province, and haddinner at a restaurant. She had a fight with a group oflocal people because they made a joke abouther while she was eating. Later, they beat her heavily and her face was injured badly, reportedCCTV. This made the public very angry. In fact, she is not the first person to be injured at famous scenic spots (景区) in China. Last month, the National Toztrism Administration (国家旅游局) gave serious warnings to three national SA scenic spots. It also asked them to change and improve in six months. The three spots are the Old Town of Lijiang, Jingpo Lake in Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang, and Laohutan Ocean Park in Dalian, Liaoning. According to People's Daily, the three spots received the most complaints(投诉)from visitors during this Spring Festival. "We're sorry for our bad work," the Old Town of Lijiang government wrote on its Sina Weibo account. "We are open to tourists' suggestions, and will make things right." If the three spots don't correct themselves in six months, the National Tourism Administration will remove them from the 5-A scenic spot list, reported Guangming Daily. "I'm glad to hear that the spots will improve themselves," said a Sina Weibo user, who once went to Lijiang but had a bad experience there. "I hope they will change into better ones."

B An old man went to live with his son, his daughter-in-law, and a four-year-old grandson. The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was very poor, and he couldn't walk steadily(平稳地). The family ate together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating rather difficult. Rice often dropped on the floor. The son and the daughter-in-law became angry with the old man, so they put a small table in the corner. There, the grandfather ate alone, while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner at the table. Since the grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl. The four-year-old son watched it all in silence. One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with a piece of wood on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, "What are you making?" The boy answered, "Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and mama to eat your food from when I grow up." The four-year-old son smiled and went back to work. The words struck the parents so that they were in silence. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks(脍颊). Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening the husband took grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table.

C Nowadays more and more people like to travel, especially when vacations come. A great number of people rush out of their homes or companies to travelling spots. They either drive or take a bus, a train, a ship and so on. Some even ride bikes. However, there is another way of travelling—poorism. People have a tour in the poorest areas of the world. Some people may take one-day poorest tour, and some even pay to stay in very poor neighborhoods to experience the lowest living standards in the world. Poorism tours take place around the world, and not just in the third world countries. You can, for instance, tour New York neighborhoods in the Bronx, in the Bund of Shanghai. Such tours can take people into the heart of poor areas within large and in some rich cities. These tours may awaken people to pay more attention to long-standing poverty, or the effects of war. Some suggest that tours in the poor areas can raise social care. And the money from the tour can be donated to help the people there.

We often hear stories of animals rescuing people. But now someone has managed to return the favor. The event took place one snowy January morning Thomas Smith was walking his dog,Jack,in the park."As I was walking,I just saw Jack running onto the ice towards the ducks in the middle, and then he fell into the water and couldn't climb out,"said Smith. He realized he had no choice but to try and save his dog."someone else told me the lake was only one﹣meter deep, but it was at least twice that.I had to break my way through the 6﹣cm ice. Finally,I got Jack by the neck, and pulled him out.I don't think I have ever felt so cold by the time we got back to dry land. And when we got there, everyone was asking if Jack was okay﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣no one was particularly worried, about me!" A neighbor,Julie Brown, saw it all happen."The dog went onto an icy lake. All of a sudden,it started to go under. There were crowds of people around, and they were all shouting and screaming. Before I knew it,the owner Smith was in the water forcing his way through the ice.I can't begin to imagine how cold it was.Everyone was very nervous, but he was as cool as a cucumber﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣he just crawled back out,put the dog on its lead, and went home." Many regard him as a hero, but Mr.Smith is quite laid﹣back about it."Most dog owners are the same as me.They would do what I did without a second thought. But in the future,I'm going to make sure he's on lead near any ice ponds,Pets are members of our family.Would you do the same for them?

Tim Berners-Lee is not the most famous inventor in the world. However, his invention has changed our lives. He was born in London,England in 1955.When he was a small boy,Tim was interested in playing with electrical things. He studied science at Oxford University. He made his first computer from an old television at the age of 21. Tim started working on early computers. At that time, they were much bigger than now.He worked in England then Switzerland.Tim was really interested in two things, computers and how the brain works. How could the brain connect so many facts so quickly? He had to work with people all over the world. They shared information about computers. It was hard to manage all the information. He answered the same questions again and again.took a lot of time.It was even difficult for computers in the same office in Switzerland to share information.Tim also forgot things easily.Could a computer work like a brain?Could it"talk"to other computers? There was an Internet already but it was difficult to use.In 1989,Tim Berners﹣Lee invented the World Wide Web(WWW) all by himself. This had a special language that helped computers talk to each other on the Internet. When people wanted to share information with others, they used the World Wide Web.The Internet grew quickly after that. Tim Berners﹣Lee doesn't think he did anything special. He says that all of the ideas about the Internet were already there. All he did was to put them together. He says that many other people worked together to make the Internet what it is today. Most inventors want to become rich. But Tim gave away the World Wide Web for nothing. He now works in America. He helps people share technology and wants the Internet to be free for everyone to use.Maybe he is the most important but least famous inventor in the world today!

I arrived in the UK last weekend to learn English. So far I have already made a few friends and had some traditional English food there. But after having three days of hamburgers, sandwiches and potatoes,I thought none could be more delicious than Chinese food, especially my favorite﹣huo guo.You can't imagine how excited I was when I got to know that there was going to be a free meal of hotpot to welcome the new students. On the way to the canteen , I seemed to smell huo guo in the air. To my surprise, when I went into the room,I didn't see any sign of huo guo.Where was it? With many questions in my head,I sat down to have the free meal. After talking with an English girl,I got to know that Chinese huo guo is completely different from hotpot.Chinese huo guo is written in two words﹣hot pot; and hotpot, one word,is a traditional English dish. Hotpot is made from mutton and onion. On the top are pieces of potatoes.People put it in the oven all day in a heavy pot on a low heat.It takes very little effort to prepare. You can often see it at parties in the UK because it's easy to prepare for a large number of people and is not expensive. Hotpot doesn't taste bad. However,I still miss huo guo﹣hot pot,two words!
