I was in a strange city and I didn't know the city at all and what’s more,I could not speak a word of the language. After having spent my first day in the town-centre,I decided to lose my way on my second day, since I believed that this was the simplest way of getting to know the strange city. I got on the first bus that passed, rode on it for several stops then got it off and walked on. The first two hours passed pleasantly enough. Then I decided to turn back to my hotel for lunch. After walking about for some time, I decided I had better ask the way. The trouble was that the only word I knew of the language was the name of the street in which I lived and even then I pronounced it badly. I stopped to ask a friendly-looking newspaper-seller. He smiled and handed me a paper. I shook my head and repeated the name of the street and he put the paper into my hands. I had to give him some money and went on my way. The next person I asked was a policeman. The policeman listened to me carefully, smiled and gently took me by the arm. There was a strange look in his eyes as he pointed left and right and left again. I thanked him politely and began walking in the direction he pointed. About an hour passed and I noticed that the houses were getting fewer and fewer and green fields were appearing on either side of me. I had come all the way into the countryside. The only thing left for me to do was to find the nearest railway station, 5. The writer believed that if you wanted to get to know a strange city . “Another bad day at school?” my father asked as I came into the room. “How could you tell? I didn’t shut the door heavily or anything,” I replied. Over the past two months I had either done this or thrown my backpack across the room every time I came home from school. Papa thinks it has something to do with moving to a new house. “I know this move has been hard on you. Leaving your friends and cousins behind is tough,” Papa said, as he put his arm around my shoulder. “What you must remember is that, with a lot of hard work and some time, you will make new friends.” “You don’t know how hard it is. This year my baseball team would have won the championship. They won’t even give me a chance to pitch (投球) here. All I get to play is right field, and that’s the worst!” Papa turned toward me. “Things will get better, I promise you. Let me ask you, do you know why you were named David Lorenzo?” “Yes, your name is David and grandfather’s name is Lorenzo.” “Very good, and what makes your grandfather so important?” “He was the first in the family to come to this country and all that,” I answered. “That is only partly correct. Your grandfather was a very great man. In Mexico, he had been a teacher. When he came to America he could only get low-paid labor jobs because he didn’t speak the language. It took him two years before he spoke English well enough to be allowed to teach here, but he did it. He never complained because he knew change could be difficult. Did he ever tell you that?” my father asked. I looked down at my feet, ashamed at my behavior. “No. That must have been hard,” I said sheepishly. “Your grandfather taught me that if you let people see your talent, they will accept you for who you are. I want you to always remember what my father taught me, even if it takes a few years for people to see who you are,” said Papa. All I could say was, “Okay.” Then I asked, “What should I do now?” Laughing, Papa said, “How about you pitch a few to me? You need some work.” 9. Why was the author unhappy that day? A. Because he moved to a new country. B. Because his baseball team lost the game. C. Because he wasn’t offered a chance to pitch. D. Because he quarreled with his friends at school. 10. The father successfully changed his son’s mood by ______. A. asking him to train harder B. telling his grandfather’s story C. playing baseball with him D. introducing him some new friends 11. The underlined word “sheepishly” probably means ______. A. cautiously B. patiently C. rudely D. shyly 12. What can we infer about the author? A. He thinks his father lives in the past. B. He’d rather live with his grandfather. C. He will continue to dislike school and everything. D. He will try his best to adapt to the new environment.

I came to study in the United States a year ago. Yet I did not know the real American society until I was injured in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court. After the accident , my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and determined to repay him one day . But the next day , he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done . I was astonished . He had good reason to charge me , he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury , I’d have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer .Now that he had helped me find a good doctor , it was only fair that I should pay him .But every time I went to see the doctor , I had to wait about 50 minutes . He would see two or three patients at the same time ,and often stop treating one so as to see another . Yet he charged me $115 each time . The final examination report consisted of ten lines , and it cost me $215. My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met . But after that he avoided seeing me at all . He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident , yet he hardly did anything . He simply waited to collect his money . He was so irresponsible that I decided to dismiss him . And he made me pay him $770. Now I had to act as my own lawyer. Due to my inexperience, I told the insurance company the date I was leaving America . Knowing that ,they played for time,… and I left without getting a cent. My experiences taught me two things about America: firstly, in a country like America money is everything . It is more important than friendship, honor or professional morality . Secondly ,foreigners are still being unfairly treated. So when we talk about America , we should see both its good and bad sides . 13. The author’s roommate offered to help him because __________. A. he felt sorry for the author B. he thought it was a chance to make some money C. he knew the doctor was a very good one D. he wanted the author to have a good lawyer 14. The underlined word “ charge “ in this passage means ___________. A. be responsible B. accuse C. ask as a price D. claim 15. Both the doctor and the lawyer in this passage are very ___________. A. friendly B. greedy C. professional D. busy

You are probably better at some school subjects than others. 16 A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. 17 So it is important to do well at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong or weak subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. _18 Knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs. 19 If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job. Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. 20 Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background.
