New Zealand is a land of beautiful lakes,and as we were driving down from Christchurch to Mount Cook National Park, suddenly the large blue water of the Lake Tekapo appeared ahead with her arresting elegance.The beauty of New Zealand has remained complete over the years ,its natural glory still relatively unaffected. We stopped in our tracks to take in the beauty of the lake surrounded by the Southern Alps in the South Island. While we were driving along the amazing beaches in the North Otago Coast, we stopped to see one of the nation's most fantastic attractions. In a small fishing village in Moeraki, there is a sandy beach full of strange spherical boulders(圆形巨石).“I have seen the most amazing rock structures in Stonehenge but never seen these extremely large boulders,” I said in amazement. One of the fellow travelers explained that according to the Maori legend(传说), once upon a time the Moeraki Boulders were gourds (葫芦). And they were actually used by ancient people for carrying food aboard on a famous canoe(独木舟)named “Araiteuru”. Then accidentally, the canoe crashed. They thought that the crash survivors were transformed into the area's surrounding hills, and the gourds were transformed into gray and spherical boulders. I was interested in the spherical boulders and after a brief Googling during the trip, I came to know that millions of years ago, the rocks remained hidden inside the cliffs in the area and they gradually became visible. Then due to years of erosion they took the present forms and “The Food Basket of the World" made the place a popular tourist attraction. I tried to memorize the story as I realized how we are dependent on written records and how forgetful we are. We think eggshells fragile. Yet these thin, easily breakable shells may be the key to making better and stronger bone grafts(移植) for human. Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML)have developed a method of using microscopic particles(微小颗粒) of eggshells to help grow new bones. Since eggshells are made mostly from calcium carbonate, a material we already have in our bones, the researchers hope they will be more readily accepted by the body. The material could one day be used to help repair bones affected by accidents or diseases “There is a great need for developing new and functional materials to repair and regenerate damaged bones,” says Gulden Camci-Unal，a professor of chemical engineering at UML who led the research. There are millions of bone graft operations around the world every year. The bone pieces used for the grafts may come from various synthetics(合成材料), which are different from eggshell particles. And not all of these grafts are successful. Sometimes the grafts fail to cause bone formation, and sometimes they are rejected by the body，Camci-Unal’s method involves using eggshell particles to strengthen hydrogels(水凝胶) that can hold large amounts of water while keeping their structure. The hydrogels are soft and wet and the eggshells help strengthen them. The material then serves as 3D frameworks for bone cells. Besides, using eggshells was appealing in the simplicity. It’s not something synthetic that needs to be engineered in a lab. They’ re readily available. Camci-Unal's team has had success with the material in the lab, it hasn’t been tested on animals or humans yet. The next step will be to survey doctors to understand patients’ needs. The team has applied for a patent for the material and is continuing to study it, by doing further testing at the micro-scale to better understand how it works. Fictional British detective Sherlock Holmes is probably one of the most popular and intelligent detectives in literary history. He explains, “Naturally, the only way to deal with the unknown text is by using that important piece of equipment always carried by the detective: a magnifying glass.” The Royal Mint plans to put the 50p coin in general circulation later this year. However, fans hoping to add a new one to their Sherlock Holmes collection can also get an uncirculated version for £10 from the Royal Mint’s website. What are also available are 600 limited edition Silver Proof coins for £55 each and 400 limited edition Gold Proof coins for £795 each. Born in 1859, Conan Doyle was a trained doctor running a clinic, before showing his love for writing. Holmes’ character was based on Joseph Bell, an intelligent scientist good at observing and crime solving, whom Conan Doyle studied under. Following the success of A Study in Scarlet, Conan Doyle produced many other stories. Britain’s fun tradition of putting fictional characters on currency began in 2016, when the Royal Mint celebrated Beatrix Potter’s 150th birthday with coins containing characters from the authors’ story.
