If you know exactly what you want, the best way to get a job is to get specialized training. A recent report shows that companies like graduates in such fields as business and health care who can go to work immediately with very little on-the-job training.
That’s especially true of booming fields that are challenging for workers. At Cornell's School of Hotel Administration, for example, bachelor's degree graduates get an average of four or five job offers with salaries ranging from the high teens to the low 20s and plenty of chances for rapid advancement. Large companies especially like a background of formal education coupled with work experience. But in the long run, too much specialization does not pay off. Business, which has been flooded with MBAs, no longer considers the degree an automatic stamp of approval. The MBA may open doors and command a higher salary initially, but the impact of a degree washes out after five years.
As further evidence of the erosion of corporate faith in specialized degrees, Michigan State’s Scheetz cites a pattern in corporate hiring practices. Although companies tend to take on specialists as new hires, they often seek out generalists for middle and upper-level management. This sounds like a formal statement that you approve of the liberal-arts(文科) graduate. Time and again labor-market analysts mention a need for talents that liberal-arts majors are assumed to have: writing and communication skills, organizational skills, open-mindedness and adaptability, and the ability to analyze and solve problems. David Birch, manager of the Boston Red Sox, says that he does not hire anybody with an MBA or an engineering degree. “I hire only liberal-arts people because they have a less-than-canned way of doing things,” says Birch.
For a liberal – arts degree, students focus on some basic courses that include literature history, mathematics, economics, science, human behavior and a computer course or two. With these useful and important courses, you can feel free to specialize, “A liberal-arts degree coupled with an MBA or some other technical training is a very good combination in the marketplace,” says Scheetz.

Former Irish President Mary Robinson was just making a polite conversation with an Ethiopian(埃塞俄比亚的) teenager about her wedding day. The 16-year-old had already been married for a year."She looked at me with the saddest eyes and said, 'I had to drop out of school,'" Robinson said in a telephone interview."That conveyed to me the reality, "said Robinson, the first woman to serve as Ireland's president and former U.N.high commissioner for human rights."Her life, as far as she is concerned, had more or less ended."
Robinson said keeping girls in school was one of the most important things policymakers could do to address the coming challenges of an ever-increasing population, predicted by the United Nations to reach 7 billion soon."European countries are concerned about aging populations as is Japan, but this is much less of an issue than the huge number of people which we are going to see over the next 40 years when the population goes from 7 billion to 9 billion, "she said."Almost all of that increase will be in poor developing countries, so that we have a very big challenge."
Family planning experts worry in particular about the future population explosion in sub-Saharan Africa. In May, the United Nations projected the world population would reach 9.3 billion in 2050 and 10.1 billion by 2100. Much of that growth will come from Africa, where the population is growing at 2.3 percent a year—more than double Asia' s 1 percent growth rate. If that rate stays consistent, which is not certain, Africa's population will reach 3.6 billion by 2100 from the present 1 billion.
Joel Cohen, a professor of population studies at Rockefeller University and Columbia University in New York, said universal secondary education offered a way to reduce population in high birth-rate regions. In addition to providing information about birth control, a secondary education teaches women to reduce their own fertility(生育力), improve the health of their children and allows them to move from a mind-set of having many children, in the hopes that some will survive to improving the quality of each child's life, Cohen wrote in the journal Nature.

Frank joined the army after middle school. He did quite well in everything besides shooting. One day, the new soldiers were practiced shooting. Frank performed poorly while the rest was doing quite well. After he had shot at the target nine times but had not hit once, the officer shouted, “I had never seen such a fool! Don’t wast away your last bullet! Go behind that wall and shoot yourself with it!” Frank went behind a wall, and a few seconds late the sound of a shot was heard by the officer and the other soldier. “Heavens!” the officer said. “ Has that silly man real done so?” He ran behind the wall anxiously, only find Frank standing there straight, saying, “ I’m sorry, but I missed again.”
High-tech machines have made life easier for millions around the world. However, some people still prefer low-tech ways of doing things. Here’s an example of why this is happening. You can microwave a frozen hamburger in 60 seconds. However, it won’t taste as good as one you cook on the stove. And if you’re in that much of a hurry, you probably won’t take time to toast the bun.High-tech cooking saves time, but it doesn’t make for better-tasting meals.
Most people get their news from high-tech sources like television or the Internet. This has many advantages. For example, electronic news is more up to date than newspapers or magazines. It’s also more exciting to see live and videotaped news events than photographs. However, newspapers and magazines have some important advantages. They give more background and details. They also let you read the parts that are important to you and skip the rest.
Other high-tech timesavers have similar disadvantages. For example, most people use the phone or e-mail to stay in touch with friends and family members who live in other places. But when you use the Internet or the phone, you won’t always think carefully about what you are saying, and sometimes you forget the important things you want to communicate.Similarly, when you word-process a homework assignment instead of handwriting it, you can check your spelling electronically and put in fancy headings. However, some students are so busy with the computer that they don’t pay enough attention to the actual words they are writing.

With its budget of $80 million , John Woo as director, and an all-star cast, Red Cliff is the most expensive and ambitious Asian-financed film ever. Last week I saw the release of the second part, and boy oh boy does it shows.
But watching the film as a foreigner I felt I was missing out on something. Not knowing my Cao Cao's from my Zhou Yu's, I was not even sure whom I wanted to win. Certainly after the opening scene, in which Cao Cao is seen watching a game of Cuju, an ancient Chinese variation of football, I knew who had my support. After all, any man who enjoys his football is someone after my own heart. But after Cao Cao resorted to some evilness strategies against his enemies in the south, I wasn't so sure he was the man I should be rooting for.
And there is a lot more to Red Cliff 2 than just extravagant battle scenes. The film does not take itself too seriously. Conversations between leaders are littered with one-liners, many of which had the audience in laughter. There is even enough to keep fans of more romantic entertainment happy too. This includes a charming relationship between a southern spy and an innocent northern soldier. The characters' interaction provides some genuinely heart-warming moments in the middle of the battle.
Clocking in at around two hours, the film certainly does justice to the history story. When I walked out the cinema, I felt as drained as Cao Cao's soldiers must have 1,800 years ago.

The desire to be noticed by peers(同龄人)is a natural tendency. Your style—the way you dress up, the way you carry yourself, the trends you follow—plays a key role in helping you stand out from the others. 31 The following tips can help you.
1. Be yourself.
Why be a second-rate version of anybody else when you can be the first-rate version of yourself. Nothing will help you stand out of the crowd more than your own features because there can be only one you. Everyone has their own belief, their own way of thinking, their own experiences that shape their styles. However, self-doubt and fear of disapproval drive many to abandon their own ways and follow what everyone else is doing. 32
2. Keep an open mind.
Open-mindedness helps you see things from a different perspective, understand others, find opportunities, and learn from others. 33 There are several styles that you should explore and determine which suits your own personality. Nobody knows what fashion you are enthusiastic about. But you should be clearly aware of your own true feelings about it.
3. Keep up with the recent trends
Fashion is always changing. 34 As society changes, so does fashion. Changing trends reflect the changes in people's taste. Similarly, your senses of fashion changes as you gain more experiences in life. Keeping track of the latest fashion will help you redefine your style.
4. Wear your confidence
Your attitude towards dressing can make a significant difference on how you look. You can wear a very beautiful dress, but if you can't carry it with confidence, it will not look good on you. 35 . Don't wear an uncomfortable dress just because everyone or your friend is wearing it. Remember, it's okay to have your own style as long as you are confident with it.
A. Also, it tells a lot about your personality.
B. What worked yesterday may not work today.
C. Copying others will make you just another face in a crowd.
D. Having an open mind can be very helpful in defining your style.
E. On the other hand, even an average dress looks great on people who wear it confidently
F. It is not absolutely necessary to follow every new trend, and you can enjoy the ones you like.
G. Simply following the fashion trends or wearing expensive clothes will not help you get a distinct style.
Analysis of the composition of quicksand shows that there are four key ingredients—sand, obviously water, clay and salt. Together these materials form a structure resembling a house of cards, with large water-filled gaps between the sand particles, which are loosely glued in place by the clay. As long as it’s left alone, the structure remains stable. But as soon as it’s disturbed, by stepping on it, the clay changes from a jelly-like consistency to a runny liquid. The effect is the same as stirring a pot of yoghurt. Liquefying(溶解)the clay makes the quicksand about one million times runnier, and the whole house of cards comes tumbling down, with you inside it.
Very quickly, the sand sinks to the bottom and the water floats to the top. This is where the salt comes in. When there’s enough salt present, as soon as the clay particles liquefy, electrical charges make them begin to stick together to form bigger particles and these also settle with the sand. Quicksand is a mixture which looks like solid, but behaves more like a liquid.
Despite its murderous reputation, quicksand does not such people under and swallow them, although it can hold a person in firm grip. The human body is more buoyant(有浮力) in quicksand than in water, and sooner or later anyone trapped in it will float.
Unlike most liquids, quicksand’s viscosity, or “runniness” can suddenly change if it comes under pressure, for example under a human foot. The surface gives way and the victim quickly sinks in up to the knees, surrounded by an area of dirty things that turns semi-solid around its victim. Escaping from the quicksand’s grip(紧握) requires a large amount of force. Without something solid to pull at, people often find they are stuck fast. Pulling at one leg simply makes the other one sink further.
So how do you escape from quicksand’s control? Stay still and call for help. Staying still stops you sinking any further, until--with luck--help arrives on the scene. If no one appears and you need to draw yourself out, gently lie down on your back until your body is floating on the sand. Next, roll over onto your stomach and pull yourself forwards with your hands, so that you gradually “swim” towards firmer ground. It is a slow and dirty business, but it works.
This technique has one barrier: it goes against a very powerful human nature. Faced with danger in the open, nine out of ten stay on their feet so that they can run away, in which case it can worsen the situation.
32.Which ingredient of the quicksand make someone trapped in it stuck and stuck fast?

Perhaps drawing inspiration from Spiderman, beachgoers in China' s eastern city of Qingdao
have come up with a new way of protecting their skin from the sun. They call it the "face-kini". It was first sported by middle-aged women as a practical addition to their swimsuits, but now the face-kini has gone global.
New York-based style magazine CR Fashion Book, founded by former Vogue Paris editor
Carine Roitfeld, recently published a photo shoot of models with pouting(撅起的) red lips, wearing face-kinis, chic swimsuits and fancy jewellery .
The transformation of what' s considered the symbol of "old woman style" in China to high fashion has amused Internet users. In two days, the subject was widely spread on the Chinese Twitter,
Weibo. "Chinese old women are at the centre of the global fashion world," said one comment. "It looks like bank robbers attacking the beach," others joked.
When it comes to avoiding the sun, it seems Chinese creativity is unlimited. Apart from the face- kini, the Chinese use special UV-blocking sun umbrellas which can be attached to bike handles.
There are also sun- blocking removable sleeves and Batman- style capes. The list goes on. On Chinese television, commercials for magic whitening creams are everywhere. White is seen as
beautiful here, or as the old Chinese saying goes: "One touch of white covers 100 kinds of ugliness."
It' s a curious contrast to the fact that people in many western countries pay for tanning(晒黑). Tanning salons are just now starting to take off in big Chinese cities, where western influences are
deeper.
Liu Yupu, or "China tanning boss" as he goes by on Weibo, took the sudden popularity of face- kinis with a pinch of salt. He said: "These days, if you had just been to a tanning salon in China. Your parents and close friends may call you an idiot, but you'll also get plenty of praise." But can a beautifully-tanned woman turn as many heads as the face-kini on the Qingdao beach?
