It has always been said that women are not good drivers, because they simply don’t have very good driving ability. On the other hand, most car accidents happen to men; very few happen to women.
From this, we can see that women are much more careful while driving. Another very interesting fact that we should point out is that in the past, women preferred to let their husbands be the only driver in the family rather than have a driving license. Somehow they were prevented from making this step in their lives, but nowadays there are many women that want to pass their driving tests from an early age.
However, we have to admit that men are more skillful drivers than women, but this does not mean that a woman cannot become a good driver by accumulating(积累) experience. So more and more teenagers and women around the age of thirty now want to pass their driving tests. While taking their driving lessons, they also have a number of special lessons with their parents or somebody in the family that has a driving license, this is just to improve their driving abilities and help them to pass the tests more easily.
To conclude, we can say that women are not such bad drivers. They just need more experience than men in order to be able to drive well. And on the other hand, there are a number of women that show better driving skills than the men around them.

I live in Hollywood. You may think people in such an attractive, fun—filled place are happier than others. If so, you have some mistaken ideas about the nature of happiness.
Many intelligent people still equate happiness with fun. The troth is that fun and happiness have little or nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is what we experience after an act. It is a deeper, more long—lasting emotion. Going to an amusement park or ball game, watching a movie or television, are fun activities that help us relax, temporarily forget our problems and maybe even laugh. But they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun ends.
I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that happiness has nothing to do with fun. These rich, beautiful individuals have constant access to exciting parties, fancy cars, expensive homes, everything that spells “happiness”. But in memoir(回忆录)after memoir, celebrities reveal the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun: depression, alcoholism, drag addiction, broken marriages, troubled children, and long—time loneliness. The way people hold on to the belief that a fun—filled, pain—free life equates happiness actually decreases their chances of ever attaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equated with happiness, then pain must be equated with unhappiness. But, in fact, the opposite is tree: More times than not, things that lead to happiness involve some pain.
As a result, many people avoid the very efforts that are the source of tree happiness. They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment, charitable work and self—improvement.
24. According to the passage, “fun activities” ________.
A. are the things we do before we find happiness
B. may help us relax and forget our problems sometimes

D. could provide long—last positive effects

A. possess happiness because they are rich and famous
B. experience almost all kinds of happy things
C. tell us happiness isn’t equal to fun using their own stories

26. It is difficult for people to find real happiness because ________.
A. they believe happiness is the fun life without pain
B. they find pain equals unhappiness
C. they fear to lose what they already have in life
D. they are afraid all their efforts were in vain
27. The main purpose of the text is to ________.
A. describe the difference between happiness and fun
B. show the true meaning of happiness
C. encourage people to pursue fun activities
D. advise people to find their real life

Dear Cathy,
I am writing to share my opinion on fashion with you, for I had just heard that you are disappointing because you can’t afford famous brands.
I shall say that it is natural for people to care about his appearance. And it is true that fashionable thing like clothes and shoes will make one more eye-catching. However, I think it is real a waste of money for you to buy famous brands. Besides, it will also add the burden of your parents.
What’s more, beauty is only skin-deep. There are many other things in which can make you popular beside fashion. A great amount of knowledge and a warm heart will surely win others’ respect.
As the saying goes, never judge the person by his appearance. I do hope that you will remember the saying and be as happy as you used to.
"I like photography because it captures amazing things that you might not see again,"Timmy Walsh says.He takes pictures of flowers, sunsets and road signs. But those photos don't usually end up in a scrapbook(剪贴薄)or on his bedroom walls.

When Timmy is at a show,he greets each customer and talks about what he was thinking when he took his photos. And he always shares facts about lung cancer.Sometimes donations and sales are slow, but that doesn't bother him."It doesn't matter how much money we made because we just raised awareness,"he says.Timmy knows that finding a cure for lung cancer will take time and effort. So Timmy will keep doing his part by shooting and selling photos of the things he sees.

At times my mom has been uncomfortable seeing these qualities in me. For example, when I was 12,I went to Puerto Rico all by myself to stay with my grandmother for the summer. My mom was extremely nervous about it. She kept telling me how things were different in Puerto Rico,to always put on sunscreen, not to wander away from my grandmother, and other warnings. She helped me pack and did not leave the airport until she saw my plane take off.
But despite her worries, she let me go on my own. As I moved into my teens, she continued to give me space to grow and learn, even when it might have been difficult for her. When I reached my senior year,I decided to move away for college. Once again I found that I differed from my peers:While many of them wanted to stay close to home,I couldn’t wait to be out in the world on my own. While my mom may not have been happy at the thought of my going away, she was supportive and excited for me.
One big thing I realized during my senior year,as my mom granted me more freedom, was that she actually believes in me and trusts me. That means a lot. Most of my life, and especially when I was little, the main person I tried to impress in my schoolwork or other things was my mother. I knew she expected nothing but the best from me. Sometimes it was hard to live up to her standards;getting a single B on my report card would make me feel bad because I knew she wanted me to have all A’s.
I know that her high standards have helped me stay focused on what’s important, like education, and made me who I am. I am thankful for her support and involvement in my life .Most of all I respect her. She is the strongest woman I know and that’s why I have turned out so strong and independent.

The Importance of Setting Speech Goals
A speech is a wonderful opportunity to inform, persuade or entertain. The best speeches often take on a combination of all three of these components. However, before you can go about the writing of a great speech, it is important to set goals. Goals keep you, your speech and your audience focused.
What a goal is
In the context of a speech, a goal is the purpose of the speech, and what it hopes to accomplish. For example, the goal of a eulogy (颂歌) might be to celebrate the life of a loved one. The goal of a speech at a political gathering would be to inform the crowd about the political position of a candidate and persuade them to vote and campaign for the candidate in question.
Why a goal is important
Without a goal, a speech is without direction. The goal informs the structure and content of the speech. For example, if a speech’s goal is to convince people that smoking is bad for them, the speech will be structured with persuasive arguments to back up the goal. A speech with a goal of informing the audience will keep the information fair and factual.
A goal is incredibly important to the speech’s ability to connect with an audience. If the speaker is unaware of the goal of the speech, the audience will likely be unaware as well. This severely reduces the effectiveness of the message.
Aside from informing the audience of the content and structure, a speech’s goal drives the speaker to greater heights. If a speaker is asked to speak on a specific subject, but never establishes the goal, they won’t know where to start in the research, organizing and writing of the speech.
___________________________________
If you have been charged with (被委以) delivering a speech, establishing a goal can seem difficult at first. There are several things to take into consideration. First, think about who you will be speaking to. The demographic (人口统计) of your audience will likely determine whether you will be able to persuade them, or whether they will be able to sit through. Second, think about the topic itself. If the topic is something controversial(有争议的), it may be worth your while to consider an informative approach to present both sides of the issue. Finally, consider your resources. A speech with an informative or persuasive goal usually requires a great deal of research, and sometimes takes more time to write.
61. According to the passage, what three components does the best speech combine?
A. Informing, delivering and entertaining. B. Informing, persuading and entertaining.
C. Informing, writing and delivering. D. Informing, writing and persuading.
62. The goal of a speech at a political gathering might be _______.
A. to persuade the audience to vote for a candidate
B. to celebrate the life of a person you admire
C. to entertain the audience with humor and magic
D. to persuade the audience to buy new products
63. All the following indicate the importance of a speech goal EXCEPT that _______.
A. a speech will lose its direction without a goal
B. a speech goal can help keep the audience aware of the speech
C. a speech goal can help the speaker know about the research, organizing and writing
D. a speech goal makes it possible for the speaker to achieve whatever he wants in life
64. Which of the following can be filled into the blank as the subtitle for the last paragraph?
A. How to achieve a speech goal B. How to deliver a difficult speech
C. What to consider to establish a goal D. What to consider to deliver a speech

Beer and fried chicken — Thanks to a South Korean drama currently on air, Man From the Stars, this new mix-and-match junk food trend has become popular among young audiences, despite its unhealthy nature. Indeed, South Korean TV dramas, or K-drama for short, have been a major force in the South Korean pop-culture wave that has captured the hearts of young Chinese audiences. According to iQiyi, a video website that features Man From the Stars, by Feb 15, the number of views for the TV drama hit 370 million in China.
“It is interesting to explore what elements of those dramas appeal to audiences. It’s obviously more than just pretty faces,” says Yan Feng, a professor of Chinese literature at Fudan University. Reflected by audiences, culture critics and insiders of the industry, youth fantasy, creative storylines, cultural proximity in East Asia, and well-organized production all add up to K-drama’s success, along with, of course, those handsome and cute faces dressed in the latest fashion trends.
“Everyone fancies a perfect partner, handsome or beautiful,” says Zhou Ying, a professor at Chongqing Technology and Business University. “The South Korean TV industry is feeding this need.” After Lee Min-ho appeared on CCTV’s annual Spring Festival gala, he became the most famous South Korean in China. Only weeks later, Kim Soo-hyun, lead actor in Man From the Stars, swept the country. Apart from pretty faces, fashion is another highlight of the series. Each time actors from the series wear a new set of outfits, similar clothes experience a sales boom online, according to Xiao Yi, a Taobao store owner.
As is known, with love triangles, incurable diseases, and Cinderella tales, storylines in South Korean dramas may seem a bit commonplace. While The Man From the Stars challenges this by putting aliens and time travel into these existing stories, Peng Sanyuan, a screenwriter, says a focus on detail is a key factor in the success of these dramas. “In order to accurately target audiences and find emotional reflections with them, more and more female writers are working in the industry,” says Peng about her experience of exchanging ideas with South Korean colleagues. According to the experts, South Korean writers somehow make sense of these plots, no matter how unlikely it seems.
24. Why has beer and fried chicken become so popular among Chinese young people at present?
A. Because the food tastes very great.
B. Because they want to change the trend.
C. Because the food is good for their health.
D. Because they are deeply affected by the Korean TV drama.
25. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “proximity” in paragraph 2?
A. similarity B. difference C. conflict D. curiosity
26. According to the whole passage, how many elements can lead to the appeal of Korean dramas?
A. Two B. Four C. Six D. Seven
27. What makes Man From the Stars different from other K-dramas according to the last paragraph?
A. Female writers B. Creative stories
C. Pretty faces D. Fashionable clothes
Like many other small boys, I was fascinated by cars, not least because my oldest brother was a bit of a car guy and subscribed to cool magazines like Car and Driver and Motor Trend. Every so often, one of those magazines would run an article on the “Car of the Future”. They featured unconventional styling and things like small nuclear reactors as power sources. Yet, frankly, my car doesn’t do anything that my brother’s Studebaker didn’t do. It goes, it stops, it burns gasoline, it plays music. I still have to steer it, and it still runs into things if I don’t steer it carefully.
But guess what? All of these things are subject to change in the not-so-distant future. It will still go and stop, but it may not burn gasoline, I may not have to steer it, and it may be a lot better at not running into things.
Airbags aren't the be-all and end-all in safety. In fact, considering the recent news about people occasionally being killed by their airbags in low-speed collisions (碰撞),they obviously still need some development. But they aren't going away, and in fact, you can expect to see cars appearing with additional, side-impact airbags, something some European car manufacturers already offer.
Better than systems to minimize (使减少到最低限度) injury in the event of an accident, however, are systems that minimize the likelihood of an accident happening in the first place. Future cars may be able to eliminate many of the major causes of accidents, including drunk-driving, tailgating (与前车距离过近) and sleepiness. Cars could be equipped with sensors that can detect alcohol in a driver's system and prevent the car from being started, for example. Many accidents are caused by people following the car in front too closely. As early as next year, you'll be able to buy cars with radar-equipped control systems. If the radar determines you're closing too quickly with the car in front, it will ease up on the throttle (油门). For city streets, expect other radar devices that will give advance warning that the car in front of you has slowed abruptly (突然地) and you should step on the brakes-or that may even brake for you.
Will cars eventually be able to drive themselves? There's no reason to think it won't be technically possible, and Mercedes is working on a system that can brake, accelerate and steer a vehicle down a highway on its own. Nobody really expects people to give up all control to their cars, but such systems could be used as failsafe systems to keep cars on the road and bring them safely to a stop even if the driver suddenly became disabled.
71.Why was the author fascinated by cars?
A. Because other small boys liked to own a car of their own, too.
B. Because he read exotic things about cars in his brother's magazines.
C. Because his oldest brother loved to take him to places in his car.
D. Because he subscribed to cool car magazines.

73.Which of the following statements is true of airbags?
A. They are in need of further improvement.
B. They are going to disappear gradually.
C. They kill people instead of protecting them in low-speed collisions.
D.They are a standard feature of European cars.
74.According to the author, what will future cars do if the sensors detect alcohol in the driver's
system?
A.They will give a warning in advance. B.They will brake automatically.
C.They will ease up on the throttle. D. They will not start.
75.Which of the following statements is true according to the last paragraph?
A.People will give up all control to their cars.
B.Cars will be able to drive themselves.
C.No cars will ever break down on the roads.

Four years ago,a lobster(龙虾)fisherman,Gary Nichols, had never seen a lionfish, but today his traps are full of them.He catches so many lionfish now that he’s started to sell them. While his lobsters sell for $16 per kilogram, lionfish only make him $12. Lionfish are causing a great concern on his business and the commercial fishing industry in Florida, threatening other fish populations—in some cases reducing them by up to 90%.
Lionfish are native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans, but were accidentally introduced into Atlantic and Caribbean waters during the 1990s.With no natural enemies in the Atlantic and an ability to reproduce year-round,plus the favorable environment, their numbers have been rising in recent years.
Not only are lionfish causing losses to lobster fishermen like Nichols, they are also threatening the balance of the fragile ecosystem.
“Lionfish are eating almost anything that fits in their mouths.”says Lad Akins, director of REEF,a marine conservation group.“Some are commercially valuable fishes, like grouper and snapper that the fishermen depend on.Lionfish even could result in the extinction of some fish.”
In an effort to solve the problem,REEF runs a monthly contest, awarding prizes to those who catch the most lionfish. It also runs workshops educating divers about safe collection and removal techniques. Many volunteers have also joined the fight with a campaign that encourages people to eat lionfish.
“If we can’t beat them, let’s eat them!”said Michelle Kosiek, the manager of the Fish House Encore, which has been serving lionfish for the past 18 months.“There is a little bit of fear factor eating them.In fact, those who tried it have spoken well of it.”
